This is an exciting opportunity to join the West Yorkshire Police Mounted Section. The grooms are an integral part of our department and we are looking for dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable candidates to join the section to assist with the welfare and care of our horses as well as the maintenance of our yards and equipment.
The successful candidates will also be expected to assist officers in getting horses ready for duty including tacking up, loading and upon their return assisting with untacking, grooming and cleaning tack. These duties occasionally may be required away from the stables to assist officers with the horses prior to or after large events.
Your daily duties will consist of mucking out, preparing feeds and hay nets, yard maintenance and cleaning horseboxes and general welfare of the horses. You will also assist with the clipping, trimming and turn out of the horses. There may also be occasions where you are solely responsible for the yard and horses.
The successful candidates will need prior experience of working with horses, including riding, exercising and schooling with a good knowledge of stable management and horse husbandry. Once in role you may be expected to ride and exercise horses after undertaking an assessment. This is a demanding role, and candidates must be physically capable of riding, maintaining stables, yards and paddocks
Having the ability to undertake and successfully pass a LGV Full CAT C Driving Test would be desirable. Once established in role, West Yorkshire Police will provide this training.
Candidates must be able to work shifts. The pattern does include some weekend and evening working.
Please note that the selection process will include a practical based assessment and then an interview based on the competency values framework., Any shift enhancements/weekend allowances are based on the published Force pattern any deviations from this could mean the enhancements/allowances may differ or not apply, for full details refer to staff Terms & Conditions.
West Yorkshire Police is committed to improving the diversity of its workforce to better reflect the diverse communities we serve. We therefore encourage applications from female officers, all minority groups and individuals who identify with one or more of the protected characteristics as defined by the Equality Act 2010. Applications are also welcome from those who have gained transferable skills and experience outside of Operational Support.
Applicants should be aware that it is not always possible to carry out adequate vetting checks on persons who have not been resident within the UK for the last three years. Therefore, where this applies, applicants may be refused because it was not possible to vet them to the appropriate standard.
