Overview

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust invites applications for the role of Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine at Southampton Children’s Hospital. This is a fixed-term to permanent contract. Applications are invited for at least one substantive consultant post in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine, with full-time or part-time options. The role requires experience in paediatric cardiac intensive care, renal replacement therapies and advanced ventilatory support, including inhaled nitric oxide, high frequency oscillation and extracorporeal life support. Significant experience in the management of severe traumatic head injuries and complex patients with multiple organ failure and critical care transport medicine.


Main duties / Responsibilities

Clinical duties: All clinical sessions will be in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and covering the Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team (SORT) based at Southampton Children’s Hospital. The case mix includes a mixed general PICU with support for paediatric subspecialties including paediatric cardiology and cardiac surgery, paediatric neurology and neurosurgery, paediatric nephrology, haematology/oncology, respiratory, gastroenterology, infectious diseases/immunology, endocrinology, paediatric surgery, general paediatrics and trauma. The PICU participates in the regional retrieval service and is part of the Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team as second on-call consultant.

Essential experience includes paediatric cardiac intensive care, renal replacement therapies, advanced ventilatory support (inhaled nitric oxide, HFOV), and ideally time in a commissioned ECMO unit. Significant experience in the management of severe traumatic head injuries, complex multi‑organ failure and transport medicine. Participation in medical governance, undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research and continuing medical education.

Training and research: Undergraduate medical teaching for Southampton University Medical School, including paediatric tutorials and supervision of medical student projects. Teaching of postgraduate medical staff, advanced care practitioners, nurses and other disciplines. Educational and clinical supervision for resident doctors where appropriate.

Administrative duties: Manage administrative duties associated with patient care and running of clinical departments. Shared secretarial support and office space are provided. We are the Wessex paediatric major trauma centre with a dedicated paediatric emergency department on site. The successful applicant will join the Consultant Team for PICU (11 whole-time-equivalent consultants). This is a new post due to service expansion.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

Clinical duties: All clinical sessions will be in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) and covering the Southampton Oxford Retrieval Team (SORT). You will work with multi-disciplinary teams across paediatric subspecialties and support services. You will also participate in the regional retrieval service (SORT) as second on-call consultant.


Qualifications, Training & Experience

* MRCPCH/FRCA or equivalent
* GMC registration with licence to practise
* Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
* Valid APLS Training
* Completion of all competencies in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine (minimum of 2 years) in a unit approved for training by the RCPCH GRID with a signed-off training record, AND either six months of anaesthetic training or GMC register with subspeciality PICM via CESR/Portfolio pathway, OR existing substantive Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine
* Experience in congenital heart disease including cardiac ECMO
* Extensive experience in transporting critically ill children (land)
* Trauma experience
* Teaching and training experience
* Experience of cardiac intensive care
* Experience of general intensive care
* Experience of critical care transport
* Experience of critical care outreach/trauma team/cardiac arrest team member


Desirable criteria

* Valid NLS Training
* Higher degree or laboratory-based research
* Education/teaching qualification
* Experience in managing respiratory ECMO patients
* Experience of air transport

* Evidence and ability to communicate and liaise effectively with patients and colleagues (clear English communication)
* Good manual dexterity
