Domiciliary Care Assistant

Introduction
We often have vacancies for Domiciliary Care Assistants to support our service users so that they can remain in their own homes and live as independently as possible. These frontline posts are essential to our work.

What is domiciliary care?
Domiciliary care is provided to people who still live in their own homes but who require additional support with household tasks, personal care or any other activity that allows them to maintain their independence and quality of life. Anyone at any stage of life could require domiciliary care including those with learning disabilities, mental health problems, sensory impairment, or physical disabilities.

As a Domiciliary Care Assistant, you will be an essential part of the service user’s daily routine and they will be relying on you to maintain their independence.

Full time and part time hours are available:

Full time - Maximum 30 hours per week

Part time - Minimum 12 hours per week

* £13 per hour during the week
* £14.50 per hour on weekends
* Travel time and paid mileage at 45p per mile
* Shifts usually operate between the hours of 8am to 8:30pm
* Minimum 6 months' experience in care work or an equivalent social care role
* 70% of visits will be a minimum of 1 hour
* Alternate weekend availability essential
* Full UK licence with access to own vehicle
* Shifts local to Collumpton, Ottery Saint Mary and surrounding areas
* Male & Female

Key purpose of post
The key purpose of this post is to contribute to the achievement of the objectives of the service, within Care With Kindness’ policies and practices. These duties are to be carried out in the context of Care With Kindness’ value system and in line with best practice as outlined in the Skills for Care Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers and Adult Social Care Workers in England.

This post reports to the Registered Manager.

The Domiciliary Care Worker is expected to demonstrate the following competencies in carrying out his/her duties:

Support people who use the service

* Work with service users in a way that promotes their equality, diversity, and rights

* Develop relationships with service users and establish and maintain effective communication with them

* Obtain information about people who use the service, assess their needs, and contribute to the planning of how their needs can be met, passing information to others on a need-to-know basis only

* Protect service users from abuse and/or harm

Contribute to teamwork

* Make a positive contribution to and work constructively within the team

* Contribute to the development of others in the team

* Develop your own abilities to enhance work performance

Contribute to activities

* Work in a way that ensures the service is delivered in compliance with relevant legislation, Care With Kindness’ values, policies and practices and contractual requirements

* Keep appropriate records of work and communications and file them appropriately

* Promote, monitor, and maintain health and safety and security in the workplace.

Respect confidentiality

* Any information relating to service users acquired in the course of duty must be treated in the strictest confidence and discussed only within Care With Kindness with the appropriate members of staff.

* Any information relating to staff acquired in the course of duty must be treated in the strictest confidence and discussed only with the Operations Manager or, in his or her absence, with the most senior staff member on duty.

This list is not exhaustive, and amendments and additions may be required in line with future policy changes.

Person specification

Shortlisting criteria
In addressing each of these criteria, candidates must evidence their statements - it is not sufficient to state that you possess the competence.

Essential

1. At least 18 years of age

2. An understanding of the needs and experiences of people who require domiciliary care in their own home

3. The ability to work flexibly, including evenings, sleep-ins and weekends

4. Communication skills

5. Minimum 6 months’ experience in care work or an equivalent social care role

Desirable

1. Domestic skills

2. A commitment to helping people make choices for themselves

3. An understanding of teamwork

4. An understanding of discrimination and its effects

5. Administrative and financial skills

6. A capacity to benefit from training

7. Level 2/3 qualification in adult social care

8. Knowledge, understanding and experience of all 15 standards identified in the Care Certificate

Where candidates lack the competencies identified as ‘desirable’ in the Person Specification, they will be required to address these as a priority if appointed to the post.
