Job overview

Our South-East Neurosurgery/Spinal surgery unit consist of 9 Neurosurgical and 4 spinal consultants (with orthopaedic and/or neurosurgical training). By accepting this job, you would be expected to integrate into a team of 9 registrars, 6 SHO level doctors, 2 Foundation year 1 doctors and 2 Advance Clinical Practitioners (ACP). There are 2 dedicated neurosurgical wards at the RSCH. In addition, there are a number of beds on critical care. The department is based in the new Louisa Martindale Building (3Ts) providing state of the art facilities including 3 dedicated neuro/spinal theatres with intra-operative facilities, a brand new Neurointerventional angiography suite, O-arm, 3 Neuro-navigation systems, CT/MRI facilities near neuro-theatres and multiple MDT rooms.

You would have opportunities to perform and assist in a variety of neurosurgical and spinal surgical procedures with appropriate supervision and mentorship. There will be opportunities to develop your portfolio with governance activities (audits, quality improvement projects), teaching and research. The role involves a 1 in 10 oncall including long days and night shifts whereby you will be dealing with acute referrals and surgical emergencies from the wider Sussex and Kent areas. Additional opportunities to attend subspecialty clinics/MDTs and local teaching will also be provided to the successful candidate.


Main duties of the job

The successful applicants will cover both elective and emergency adult neurosurgery and spinal conditions covering Registrar on calls, working on wards, theatres, ICU/HDU, outpatient clinics and the emergency department. The registrar on call rota is 1:10 and you will be working with a highly motivated theatre, nursing, therapy and pharmacy teams. This is an excellent opportunity for the middle grade doctors who aspire to complete neurosurgical training. All of our posts are well supported and closely supervised by consultants and the successful post holders will be assigned to an Educational and Clinical supervisor and will have regular career progress supervision. The trust strongly supports teaching and training and the post holders who are deemed to be at the level of taking the FRCS Neurosurgery exam will be closely guided and supported.

On Call Commitment: 1:10 including night working

The post holder accepts that they will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with their colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and you should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.

Registrar on-call duties- dealing with acute referrals to the department, and escalating as appropriate.

Review of patients in our emergency department/surgical assessment unit, and formulation of appropriate management plans with appropriate consultant supervision.

Weekly attendance to neurosurgical theatres, assisting and performing both cranial and spinal procedures according to level of competence, with appropriate consultant supervision

Attendance at weekly departmental teaching

Participation in clinical governance, including departmental/national audits, and quality improvement projects

Attendance to outpatient departments and review of patients in clinic

Training and supervision of junior colleagues

Participation in the morning multidisciplinary board round, and communicating/liaising with allied healthcare professionals to ensure the highest levels of patient safety and care.


Person specification


Experience/ Qualifications

* MRCS (or equivalent) and previous neurosurgical experience to ST4+ level experience
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
* Advanced Life Support Certificate from the Resuscitation Council UK or equivalent
* Distinctions, Scholarships prizes, other degrees e.g. BSc MSc, MS


Clinical Skills and Experience

* At least 2 years Neurosurgical experience
* Able to independently perform lumbar punctures, insertion of external ventricular drains and ICP monitors.
* Experience in relevant specialties
* Detailed surgical logbook detailing experience in a range of neurosurgical procedures


Knowledge

* Breadth of experience in and outside specialty


Organisation and Planning

* Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
* Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
* Evidence of managerial skills: Achievements / Course attended


Academic and Research

* Evidence of participation in audit
* Research experience
* Publications
