The Department Manager has overall responsibility for the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relative and visitors who are cared for within their department or by their team.
The post involves facilitating the team to provide on-going education and training of patients and relatives on peritoneal or home haemodialysis to enable them to dialyse independently at home.
You will be required to work across the hospital-based training units at Chorley and Westmorland Hospitals as well as the community setting covering Lancashire and South Cumbria. The Home Therapies Chorley team works closely with the Home Therapies team based in Kendal to provide an equitable service for our patient. Being a competent car driver and owner is essential as the community setting covers a large geographical area.
The service also provides an acute drop-in service for the home dialysis patients.
You will also be highly motivated with excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills and have the ability to work independently as a lone worker and within a multi-disciplinary team setting.
Main duties of the job
To ensure the provision of excellent care with compassion the Ward Manager is responsible for:
•Ensuring that the nursing team and care support team within their ward or department are adequately resourced and organised.
•Providing education and training of patients and carers on their chosen treatment modality.
•Facilitating the home therapy team ensure on-going education and support for the patient and carers around their treatment modality and to continue to Support them in the community setting.
•Facilitating the home therapy units drop in service for patients and carry out on call service on a rotational basis.
•Ensuring the nursing team and care support team are adequately supported and developed to deliver excellent care with compassion in line with the Trust’s Values & Nursing & Midwifery Professional Framework.
•Leading and developing the nursing team and the support teams by being a visible and strong role model providing leadership and direction to the team, capitalising on research and development opportunities, providing clinical supervision and advice for staff and students in order to support them in reaching their full potential
•Ensuring the productive operation of the department through the monitoring and maintenance of standards that create a safe, clean and organised environment and by using processes designed to increase the time nurses spend in therapeutic contact with patients

Qualifications & Education
Essential criteria
1. Appropriate NMC Registration
2. Mentorship qualification
3. Post Registration Qualifications relevant to the role
4. NMP or working towards
5. Diploma or Degree in Nursing
6. Evidence of Education to Degree Level.
7. Successful completion of/will to work towards a leadership and development programme (equivalent to the Internal Band 6 Leadership and Development programme).
Desirable criteria
8. Level 4 ILM (Institute of Leadership and Management) or equivalent
Knowledge & Experience
Essential criteria
9. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and Safeguarding and the relevance of these to practice
10. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
11. Knowledge of ethical issues
12. Evidence of clinical competence in area of speciality eg surgery
13. Experience of mentorship and ability to identify learning and development needs
14. Experience of community working
15. Experience in the field of renal HD and PD
16. Experience of setting up a service e.g. Holiday or prison dialysis.
Desirable criteria
17. Experience of managing a clinical area
18. Knowledge of the PDPR Process
19. Evidence of working at Band 7
20. Experience of budgetary management
