The remit of the post holder is to work within a multi-disciplinary team providing and developing care for frail, older patients from across the emergency pathway and to develop a Geriatric Emergency Medicine model aligned with the Acute Frailty Assessment Unit. The individual will play an active role in the general workload of the Care Group while contributing to teaching and training of junior staff.
Job responsibilities
1. Provide high quality care to patients with a focus on older adults with complex medical and frailty-related needs across the emergency pathway, including ED and Frailty Same Day Emergency Care.
2. Lead service development and clinical leadership opportunities with potential for professional growth in education and governance.
3. Collaborate with emergency, geriatric, and multidisciplinary teams to optimise patient flow, reduce unnecessary admissions, and improve outcomes through timely, holistic, evidence-based care in an acute setting.
4. Deliver expert assessment, diagnosis, and management tailored to the needs of elderly patients.
5. Participate in 24/7 cover for the Unit on a rota basis, including covering colleagues during annual leave and sickness as detailed in the contract.
6. Provide clinical supervision of junior medical/dental practitioners as a shared responsibility with other consultant colleagues.
7. Lead teaching, examinations, accreditation duties, and contribute to CPD and clinical governance initiatives.
8. Fulfil outpatient clinic commitments in peripheral hospitals as agreed with Care Group management where part of the service structure.
9. Contribute to the Care Group's research interests in line with the Trust's R&D framework.
10. Support audit programmes, Morbidity and Mortality reviews, Clinical Governance, and Learning from Deaths initiatives.
11. Contribute to the Care Group's Business Plan and participate in discussions regarding service plans and developments with internal and external agencies.
12. Deliver activities within the contracted level of service and operating plan for the service(s).
13. Provide professional leadership for all staff within the specialty and foster projects that support post-qualification education and training.
14. Work with clinical and professional colleagues to maintain staff productivity and job satisfaction, including involvement in appraisals for peers and junior colleagues.
15. Undertake Care Group management duties as agreed with the Care Group/Departmental Manager/Clinical Director.
16. Comply with Trust infection prevention and control policies, including hand hygiene and environmental safety.
17. Prepare for and undertake protective interventions in line with evidence-based practice and patient safety.
18. As King's develops consultant-led 7-day services, contribute equally with other Consultant colleagues in future developments.
