COMMUNICATIONS AND OUTREACH JOB OPPORTUNITY

Background

In 2010, the UK Government created the world’s largest marine reserve around the ChagosIslands in the British Indian Ocean Territory. This will save an entire oceanic ecosystem,help to restore fish stocks and regional food security, and provide a platform for globalscience.

The Chagos Conservation Trust (CCT) is a small registered charity of volunteers dedicatedto promoting environmental conservation and relevant scientific research and education inrelation to the Chagos archipelago. CCT also acts as the secretariat to the Chagos
Environment Network (CEN) of leading UK and international institutions committed to theprotection of the marine reserve.

The Requirement

We need someone with sufficient relevant experience to help us with the communicationsand outreach tasks essential to support the Trust’s environmental conservation work in theChagos. You will be self-employed, willing to assist on a fee-paid basis, able to commit tothe equivalent of about 1000 hours of work a year (or 21 hours a week)], working from yourhome or business address. You will attend periodic meetings of the CCT’s ExecutiveCommittee and other meetings in London as necessary. Your routine work contact in theTrust will be the CCT Secretary. Fees paid will be subject to a maximum of £15-20,000 perannum, depending on experience.

Skills and Personal Qualities

We are looking for someone with:

• experience of working in public relations
• previous experience in organising conferences and other meetings
• good IT skills involving website and database management
• good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
• an understanding of the UK charity regulatory environment
• a real interest in environmental conservation work

TASK PROFILE

Contract: fee-paid, subject to a maximum of £15-20,000 per annum, depending onexperience, for the equivalent of about 1000 hours of work a year (or 21 hours a week),]working from your home or business address. You will be required to attend meetings inLondon, as necessary. On such occasions and for gaining initial familiarisation with theTrust’s work, it should be possible to find you temporary office space in the headquarters ofa member organisation in central London. Initial contract is for one year.

Role

Your key role will be to assist the Trust to promote its environmental conservation work inthe Chagos Archipelago, British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT).You will attend meetings of the CCT Executive Committee. Your routine work contact in theTrust will be the CCT Secretary.

Main Tasks

Your tasks will include:

• drafting press releases, articles and direct mail shots to publicise the work of the Trustin promoting environmental conservation in the Chagos
• maintaining contacts with relevant journalists and other media multipliers
• organising conferences and other meetings for CCT
• ensuring that the Trust’s website and Facebook page are kept up to date with items ofrelevant topical interest
• keeping the Trust’s membership and other databases up to date
• helping to correct factual inaccuracies on the Internet about environmental issues inthe Chagos
• helping to enhance the sale of Chagos-related goods via the Trust’s website shop andon Diego Garcia itself

Person Specification

We are looking for someone with:

• experience of PR work and website management, who is a self-starter, capable ofworking without close supervision
• good IT skills and experience of website and database management. Familiarity withMail Chimp, Drupal and PayPal is desirable but not essential
• previous experience of organising conferences and other meetings
• good interpersonal and communication skills (oral and written)
• an understanding of the UK charity regulatory environment
• a real interest in environmental conservation work

Applicants must be able legally to work in the UK, must have a university degree or at leasttwo A levels or equivalent qualifications and must have an unblemished employment history.
