Overview
About The Role Balfour Beatty is looking for a talented Design Estimator to join our Power Transmission & Distribution (PT&D) business. This is a key role responsible for producing high‑quality and competitive design estimates to support successful tendering and project delivery across our portfolio of HV substation and wider power projects. Flexible with base location - you can work from our Leeds, Newcastle, or Derby offices.
Responsibilities
* Develop clear and competitive pricing strategies in collaboration with the Estimating Manager and Substation Design Lead.
* Lead the preparation of accurate estimates aligned with bid governance and Gate processes.
* Participate in bid activities including strategy meetings, site visits, supplier reviews, risk workshops, and pricing/programme reviews.
* Review Bills of Materials, benchmark supplier quotations, and ensure estimates reflect technical and commercial requirements.
* Assess and incorporate project risks and opportunities into cost models.
* Coordinate effectively with Design, Procurement, Operations, and Commercial teams to gather and validate inputs.
* Benchmark pricing against similar projects and support internal pricing reviews.
* Contribute to smooth handover to delivery functions following contract award.
* Capture lessons learned and actual cost data from completed projects to continuously improve estimating accuracy.
Qualifications
* Strong technical understanding of substation design, equipment, and systems.
* Experience working with SSE and/or National Grid standards is advantageous.
* Solid financial acumen and analytical capability.
* Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively.
* Willingness to work occasional unsociable hours when required.
* Ability to work from a Balfour Beatty office twice per week.
* Openness to training in CANDY estimating software.
Relevant Qualifications
* HNC (or equivalent) in a relevant discipline.
* 5–10 years’ experience in an estimating or design role.
* Minimum 5 years’ experience within the power transmission and distribution sector.
