Job overview

We operate a centralised approach to our Healthcare Support Worker recruitment. As a candidate you only need to apply once but may be considered for multiple roles across the Trust.

Full timing opportunities for both experienced and aspiring Health Care Support Workers (HCSW) in the Horton Hospital.


Main duties of the job

Full training is provided; no previous experience as a Nursing Assistant or Healthcare Support Worker required.

As the Healthcare Support Worker you will:

* Provide personal care for patients, including washing, dressing, toileting, mobilising and feeding
* Assist registered staff to deliver high standard care to patients in the ward/clinical area, demonstrating compassion, kindness and sensitivity
* Support patients’ physical, psychological and social needs under the guidance of nurses
* Maintain a safe, clean and comfortable environment for patients, staff and visitors
* Show pride in the quality of care and learn from successes and setbacks

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The HCSW will undertake the following duties under the supervision of a registered practitioner:

* Assist all patients with personal care needs, empowering participation and maintaining privacy and dignity
* Perform clinical observations and accurately record and report any concerns to the registered practitioner
* Prepare patients, families and the environment for clinical activities, including setting up equipment
* Participate in initial assessment of patients’ needs under direct supervision
* Observe and report patients’ condition to a registered practitioner as required
* Monitor patients post‑clinical activity for safety and wellbeing
* Assess and monitor patients’ skin integrity and document changes
* Assist with food and fluid intake, accounting for special diets and nutritional requirements
* Encourage patients and families to share responsibility for health maintenance and promote healthy living
* Assist patients to mobilise safely using prescribed equipment and techniques, and conduct patient transfers
* Actively seek advice from registered practitioners when a patient’s condition changes
* Assist in caring for patients requiring end‑of‑life care, respecting spiritual and cultural needs
* Assist families/carers of patients receiving end‑of‑life care when appropriate
* Collect and manage specimens as requested, ensuring accurate labelling and transportation

Communication

* Contribute to handover processes to ensure continuity of care
* Communicate effectively with multidisciplinary teams, patients and carers using all methods of communication
* Greet patients and visitors with courtesy and respect, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy
* Orientate patients, families and visitors to surroundings, providing written and verbal information
* Answer telephone calls and bleep calls appropriately and efficiently, accurately relaying messages
* Use paper and electronic systems to retrieve and record patient information securely and accurately
* Apply principles of information governance and patient confidentiality
* Obtain consent for clinical interventions, reporting if not given
* Participate in ward and departmental meetings and discussions
* Support patients or families who wish to raise concerns or complaints
* Maintain professional boundaries and working relationships
* Inform patients, families and carers of delays where known


Additional information

Probationary period: 6 months (unless you already hold a contract with the Trust). COVID‑19 vaccination is encouraged but not mandatory. Shortlisting typically occurs within 2 weeks after the short‑listing process.
