Overview
Clinical Research Fellow - Breast Surgery is a full-time, 12-month position with the possibility of a second year for suitable candidates pursuing a higher degree (MD, self-funded or grant-funded). The Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust Breast Unit is one of 15 nationally accredited Oncoplastic Training Centres and supports a strong, research-active environment with opportunities to contribute to local and national studies.
Responsibilities
* Deliver clinical research under supervision of the lead clinicians in the breast surgery department and the wider trial team
* Attend a 1-2 breast clinics per week and support the breast services portfolio of research
* Set up, deliver and develop research studies, including multi-centre portfolio studies and original research
* Aim to achieve publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at national and international meetings
* Collaborate with the UoP Breast Research Group on breast biomechanics and translation to clinical practice
Core Project
A mixed-methods study of the effects of breast surgery and treatment on breast and body biomechanics. The project builds on the expertise of the UoP Breast Research Group and translates biomechanics knowledge to clinical practice, with the aim of informing surgical and radiotherapy decisions and post-operative bra design and prescription.
Where and supervision
The project will be hosted with the Breast Unit, Portsmouth Hospitals University NHS Trust, and the Research Group in Breast Health, University of Portsmouth. Supervision will be from Professor Joanna Wakefield-Scurr and Edward St John (Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon & Honorary Reader).
Qualifications
Essential
* A GMC registered medical practitioner
* Successful completion of medical training to IMY2 level or equivalent and pass achieved for part 2 written component of the MRCS examination
Desirable
* Full Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons
* A specialist training number
* A candidate wishing to pursue a career in breast surgery
* Good Clinical Practice certificate
Skills and Knowledge
* An interest in clinical research
* Enthusiasm for a career in a surgical specialty
* Understanding of breast surgery
* Clear communication with patients and colleagues
* Ability to work independently and as part of a busy team; strong time management and attention to detail
* Excellent written and verbal communication, including presentation and report writing skills
Desirable
* Critical appraisal and analytical skills for interpreting qualitative and quantitative information
* Previous NHS experience
* Prior publications and presentations related to research
