Islington Council has a number of exciting opportunities for qualified domestic gas engineers within its in-house repairs and maintenance service.
Main duties of the job
As well as completing annual landlord gas safety checks to approximately 10 properties in the north of the borough, the gas service is also responsible for completing responsive breakdown repairs. Successful candidates will have an aptitude for both areas of work.
To deliver the highest levels of service, the Council operates an out-of-hours rota, which includes regular weekday evening and weekend shifts. Out-of-hours work is contractual and attracts an additional 12% of gross salary as unsocial hours’ payment.
The Council seeks enthusiastic, diligent, and suitably qualified gas engineers to join our team. As this role involves daily interaction with customers, excellent interpersonal skills are required to ensure the best outcomes and service delivery for residents of Islington.

Job responsibilities
This role attracts an additional 12% salary shift enhancement, approximately £4,000 per year.
The Domestic Gas Engineer will carry out gas work on domestic systems and appliances within the Council's housing stock, ensuring high standards, safety, and first-time fix rates. Responsibilities include routine landlord gas safety checks, fault diagnosis, repairs, and installation of parts, following legislative and industry standards. Out-of-hours duties include working evenings, weekends, and holidays with enhanced pay.
Person specification
Education and Experience
* Proven post-qualification experience in servicing, repair, inspection of domestic gas appliances, or experience within a 3-star Gas Maintenance Contract. Current Gas Safe registration.
* Qualifications: City & Guilds, NVQ Level 2 or equivalent, and ACS qualifications CCN1, CEN1, HTR1, Wat1, CHR1, CPA1.
* Multi-skills training to NVQ3 or willingness to be trained.
* Knowledge of domestic gas systems, ventilation, and repair.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
* Knowledge of health and safety legislation, codes of practice, and British Standards related to gas safety.
* Awareness of safe construction practices, asbestos awareness, working at heights.
* Ability to organize workload, prioritize tasks, and work independently, including outside normal hours.
* Problem-solving skills, literacy, and numeracy for calculations and reporting.
* Effective communication skills with customers and colleagues.
* Proficiency with mobile technology for scheduling, repairs, and record-keeping.
* Commitment to high-quality customer service and working with diverse backgrounds.
* Physical fitness for manual handling, driving, and physical tasks.
* Flexibility to work out of hours and adapt to new practices.
* Awareness of safeguarding policies for vulnerable groups.
