Are you an experienced Nurse with a passion for Acute Stroke Care, continuous improvement and providing outstanding care?

As a Sister/Charge Nurse on the unit we are a role model and leader, and the deputy to the Ward Manager. You are an important piece of our ward's structure.

We are currently a 22 bedded Stroke Unit + 2 assesment beds, which includes being the Regional Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (5 Beds)

We specialise in care of Acute Stroke Patients, Thrombolysis and Thrombectomy, admitting patients from across Lancashire.

We provide Multi-disciplinary working, and have our own team of therapists working within the Unit.

Our Consultants provide 7 day working, and we hold a 7 day TIA clinic.

Main duties of the job

As a band 6 nurse on the ward you’re kind of a big deal.

You’ll be expected to provide strong leadership and deputise for the ward manager.

Your role will involve coordinating the Nursing team and the care of Acute Stroke Patients within our service, ensuring their journey follows the Stroke Pathway.

On a day to day basis, you will be working closely with the Stroke Specialist Nurses, Nurse Consultants and Stroke Consultants and ensuring there is adequate flow through the Unit to meet the demand for admissions.

You’ll also be working closely with Capacity Managers, Business Managers and various departments – to ensure all our patients have access to the appropriate interventions when required.

You’ll ensure the nursing care on the ward is always of a high standard and provide appropriate training and education when needed.

You’ll lead from the front and be an excellent role model for the team ensuring the unit is well-led.

On top of the standard day to day nursing care you’ll be involved in leading handovers to the nursing staff and the therapy team were appropriate, medication rounds, attending MDTs, developing working schedules, answering datix’s and handling complaints.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Support the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse or Matron in ensuring the provision of excellent care with compassion for the patients, relatives and visitors who are cared for within or by the ward, department, service or team.

Ensure a high standard of nursing is delivered by self and others based on assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of care to meet patients’ needs in accordance with agreed local and National standards and evidence based guidelines.

Assist and support the Ward Manager in the safe, effective management of the area including management of personnel, facilities and the associated systems and processes.

Act as a role model, presenting a positive image of self, team and the organisation.

Be responsible for the delivery and co-ordination of care, through appropriate professional practice, delegation and supervision of duties carried out by junior staff.

Set, monitor and maintain standards of care to improve the patient experience and outcome of care.

Proactively manage risk and maintain patient safety, conforming to health, safety and security legislation, policies, procedures and guidelines.

Communicates all relevant information to the multidisciplinary team internally and with external organisations as required, to ensure seamless care.

Promote provision of patient education and health promotion.

Promote equality in care and practice by recognising, respecting and meeting the needs and choices of individuals.

Ensures environment of care is safe, well equipped and compliant with standards for hygiene and cleanliness.

To participate in education and training of junior staff.

Maintain and develop own professional competence and seek to extend the scope of personal knowledge and skills within scope of role and professional practice.

Person specification

Qualifications and Education

Essential criteria

1. Appropriate NMC Registration
2. Diploma in Nursing
3. Evidence of continuing professional education or development in area of speciality
4. Mentorship qualification or willing to work towards

Desirable criteria

5. Post registration qualification in area of speciality

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria

6. Evidence of leadership experience and learning
7. Awareness of recent advances within nursing practice
8. Knowledge of Clinical Governance and safeguarding and the relevance to practice
9. Knowledge of relevant policies and procedures
10. Knowledge of continuous improvement
11. Knowledge of ethical issues
12. At least 2 years experience working in acute stroke

13. Knowledge of Research and Development
