Job Summary
Band 6 Biomedical Scientist – Haematology department.
Provide first‑class diagnostic and monitoring service within a 24‑hour laboratory, rotating through Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion. Applicants must be HCPC registered and hold a relevant IBMS Specialist Portfolio.
Location: Trustwide across Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Heartlands Hospital, Good Hope Hospital and Solihull Hospital.
Salary: £39,959 – £48,117 per annum (Band 6, AFC Annex 21 – 70% of top of band 6 until IBMS Diplomas awarded).
Contract: Permanent, Full‑time, Flexible Working.
Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required
* Perform technical tasks including analysis, technical validation, interpretive decisions and reporting of samples in line with HCPC standards of proficiency.
* Collaborate effectively within the laboratory team.
* Commit to a high standard of service and participate in the laboratory quality programme.
* Maintain understanding of legislation, regulation and compliance with ISO 15189:2022.
* Participate in the departmental shift system and be eligible for AFC enhanced payments.
Qualifications
* BSc (Hons) Biomedical Science or equivalent, ratified by the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS).
* State registration with the Healthcare Professions Council (HCPC).
* Post‑registration specialist competency portfolio or equivalent.
* Evidence of continuing professional development and proficiency in accordance with HCPC guidelines.
Experience
* Working experience in clinical laboratories commensurate with the laboratory position.
* Experience with laboratory techniques and automation.
* Experience dealing with suppliers, clinical and support staff, and the public or customer care.
A Working Knowledge Of
* Biomedical Science theory and practice (Haematology, Transfusion, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Cellular Pathology).
* Quality control and assurance practices.
* Laboratory health and safety.
* HCPC and IBMS professional standards, ethics and proficiencies.
Desirable
* Understanding of accreditation within labs (e.g. ISO 15189, MHRA).
Additional Criteria
* Numerate and able to undertake scientific calculations with and without aids.
* Ability to work effectively in a team.
* Manual dexterity for automated, manual and specialised techniques.
* Good IT input and MS Office skills.
* Effective written and oral communication skills.
* Logical thought processes and problem‑solving abilities with capability to plan remedial action.
* Honesty, reliability, resilience and adaptability.
* Self‑motivated with a positive attitude.
* Expected to participate in all out‑of‑hours periods required by service provision.
