An exciting opportunity has arisen for a part time band 6 Lung Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist 1 year fixed term contract/ secondment at St Richards Hospital, part of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust. The successful applicant will be working as an integral part of the CNS and wider lung team, involved in all aspects of the patients' pathway from diagnosis and treatment, through to follow-up and supporting patients living with a lung cancer diagnosis. The successful applicant will be keen to advance their clinical and leadership skills, supporting the development of the service with the CNS's. They will be dynamic, forward thinking, hard working and willing to step up to the challenge that cancer care faces . This role is eligible for visa sponsorship under the UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) Skilled Worker route however sponsorship can only be provided where applicants meet the specific requirements set by UKVI, including the relevant skill and salary thresholds (£25000), and any role-specific criteria.

Main duties of the job

To provide clinical excellence, leadership, innovation and mastery within a speciality, or group of specialties, through highly developed specialist knowledge. Providing specialist information and support for patients and carers during the diagnosis and treatment of cancer; ensuring patients have psychological assessment and intervention as necessary; supporting MDT to ensure the patient has a timely journey through the pathway; supporting, training and up skilling other teams; co-ordination of pathway with close working with cancer centre; management of cancer and treatment effects; setting and working to high standards; identifying specialist needs and care planning with patients through Holistic Needs Assessment.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main Duties and Responsibilities Communication · Act as key worker for patients to ensure single point of contact through a complex patient pathway/journey. · Confident, appropriately assertive, and respectful style of communication with patients, relatives, and colleagues. · Engaging, personable and approachable in building relationships. · Highly autonomous practitioner within lung cancer, occasionally working alone and may need to make complex decisions with support from the wider team. · Engage in highly complex conversations and dialogue with patients and carers, considering learning needs and mental capacity, utilising advanced communication skills. · Able to manage distressing situations with patients / carers. · Use developed negotiation and conflict resolution skills, when dealing with difficult or challenging situations. · Act as a core member for communication during local and regional MDT – Acting as patient advocate. Experience & Qualifications

Essential criteria

  • Registered General Nurse Educated to Post Graduate Diploma level or equivalent level of experience.
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Desirable criteria

  • Degree in Nursing/Health related subject
  • Knowledge of cancer treatments and symptom control
  • Relevant post-registration experience in cancer, palliative care, or the specialty
  • Advanced Communication Skills training
  • Psychological assessment skills Level 2 training
  • Attended Fundamentals of Cancer Care Course
  • Skills

  • Effective communication skills across the multi-disciplinary team and different health and social care settings
  • Ability to work autonomously and as part of a team.
  • Experience of acting as patient advocate
  • Use advanced communication skills to deliver complex and life altering information.
