Role Purpose
The Acute Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist is essential in ensuring the care and management of patients with cancer in an acute setting, such as a hospital emergency department or urgent care unit. The role focuses on providing expertise and leadership for patients who are experiencing oncological emergencies or complications related to their cancer treatment. The post holder will provide early specialist input, rapid clinical review, and coordination of care to enable safer, high‑quality care and facilitate early discharge where appropriate.
Responsibilities
* Provide direct patient care management, prioritising and managing workload while maintaining responsibility for an individual caseload.
* Work in conjunction with the Lead Acute Oncology Nurse to deliver a high‑quality specialist nursing service.
* Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments, initiate appropriate interventions, and plan, implement, and evaluate care.
* Collaborate with wards and departments to support timely clinical interventions, investigations, and reduce hospital stay.
* Utilise advanced communication skills with patients, families, carers, and multidisciplinary teams.
* Provide clinical knowledge, advice, and support regarding SACT, radiotherapy, suspected oncological emergencies, disease progression, and signs of cancer of unknown primary.
* Maintain documented nursing care in line with Trust and NMC standards.
* Develop personal clinical skills, including clinical assessment, risk management, evidence‑based practice, and where applicable, non‑medical prescribing.
* Interpret investigations appropriately and request them within scope of practice.
* Act as key worker for patients with cancer of unknown primary, coordinating their care pathway.
* Assist the AOS Lead Nurse in collecting service data for delivery, development, and annual reporting.
* Participate in local audits, data collection, and patient experience surveys.
* Contribute to implementation of clinical protocols and pathways for oncological emergencies and act as coordinator for these patient groups.
* Support generalist staff and Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists.
* Attend Acute Oncology Team meetings to support service delivery, quality, and development.
* Develop and maintain multidisciplinary relationships, promoting collaborative working.
* Identify and deliver educational strategies for patients, carers, staff, and to promote treatment adherence.
* Audit service aspects to ensure continuous improvement in patient care.
* Use current research and evidence‑based practice to inform clinical care and disseminate knowledge across the team.
Training and Support
Full support will be provided by the Acute Oncology Lead Nurse, with learning guided through a recognised competency‑based framework. The successful candidate will be encouraged to contribute to ongoing service development and the implementation of the Trust’s policies and objectives.
