This is a rare and exciting opportunity for an experienced Garden Manager to take the lead on a stunning 55-acre private estate in North Yorkshire. Set within 200 acres of beautiful countryside of mature woodlands, open meadows, and a peaceful deer park. This is a unique chance to shape and develop a remarkable landscape as part of an ongoing transformation.
Over the past five years, the gardens and wider landscape have been carefully designed and developed following the completion of the main hall. What’s grown from that vision is a truly diverse and inspiring collection of spaces that offer year-round interest and endless variety. The charm of a classic cottage garden to the structure of a formal parterre, the estate features a rose garden, productive potager, Japanese garden, woodland areas, sweeping herbaceous borders, and naturalistic plantings that blend beautifully into wildflower meadows. There are also immaculate formal lawns, vibrant cut flower gardens, elegant terraced and courtyard spaces, a tranquil pool garden, and a rich mix of shrubs and ornamental planting. With another layer of atmosphere, with a picturesque lake, a still pond, flowing features, and seasonal displays in a wide range of containers dotted throughout the grounds.
The estate is now embarking on an exciting journey towards organic and environmentally conscious gardening. While the estate isn’t fully organic just yet, there’s a real passion for encouraging biodiversity and adopting more sustainable gardening practices. The successful candidate will have the chance to help lead this transition and play a key role in shaping an eco-friendlier future for the gardens.
This is a hands-on role suited to someone with extensive plant knowledge and a strong background working in similar high-standard environment. The role is physically demanding and requires a proactive individual who takes pride in the estate’s ongoing presentation and future development. Ideal candidates will hold a RHS level 2 qualification or hold at least 3 years in a similar role.
The Garden Manager will be responsible for overseeing a team of 10 permanent staff members on the estate. This includes managing staff rotas, coordinating training, supporting staff development, and ensuring full compliance with health and safety procedures across the site.
The Garden Manager will join the estate experienced using a wide range of garden machinery, along with a solid understanding of machinery maintenance. They will also be responsible for ensuring that all staff on site always adhere to health and safety regulations.
The Gardens Manager will oversee the estate’s long-term planning and future development, manage budgets, and take responsibility for procurement and accounts administration.
A full driving licence is essential for the role. The successful candidate must also hold relevant certifications, including chainsaw operation and PA1 & PA6 sprayer qualifications.
Accommodation can be provided for the successful candidate. The accommodation is a three-bedroom house, with rent covered by the employer and all bills to be covered by the candidate.
