Highly Specialist Clinical Health Psychologist (Physical Health)

Following confirmation of funding for substantial service development, we are recruiting a Highly Specialist Clinical Health Psychologist for the UHP Severe Asthma Service. This new post offers flexibility to grow the role as the service develops, working alongside newly funded nurses, physiotherapist, speech and language/voice therapist, pharmacist and MDT coordinators.

The successful candidate will join an established, friendly asthma MDT, working closely to improve asthma care, develop expertise, and link with the SW severe asthma network to streamline access to biologics and manage comorbidities associated with asthma.

The UHP Severe Asthma Service serves West Devon and collaborates with the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Treliske to provide severe asthma care, including biologic treatment.

Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, NHS ‘Priority’ and ‘At Risk’ staff throughout Devon who can demonstrate recent relevant experience as required by the Person Specification.


Responsibilities

* Provide highly specialist psychological services for adults with severe asthma and associated conditions under the UHP Severe Asthma Service.
* Work within the Severe Asthma MDT alongside respiratory consultants, clinical nurse specialists, and allied health professionals.
* Contribute to service development, including data collection, analysis, and completion of outcome measures.
* Perform assessment and deliver psychological therapy, advice, or consultation to patients and professionals, acting autonomously within professional guidelines.
* Provide teaching and training, and supervise other professionals as required.
* Collaborate with the Clinical Health Psychology team on chronic respiratory conditions.
* Lead initiatives to increase uptake of asthma biologics and manage patient comorbidities.


Person Specification


Knowledge & Experience

* Demonstrable experience as a clinical/counselling psychologist.
* Full clinical responsibility for patient care and treatment.
* Knowledge of policies and legislation for clinical psychologists in physical health settings.
* Representation of clinical psychology within multidisciplinary teams and support for vulnerable individuals.
* Specialist psychological assessments and evidence-based interventions for complex needs and risk assessment.
* Collaboration with service users, families and carers.
* Experience working in multidisciplinary teams and hospital environments.
* Clinical supervision of clinical and counselling psychologists.
* Competence in comparing frameworks and approaches used in clinical, counselling, health and applied psychology.


Qualifications

* Post-graduate doctorate in clinical psychology or equivalent counselling qualification accredited by the BPS, covering models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, developmental psychology and at least two distinct therapies.
* Active registration as a Practitioner Psychologist with the HCPC.
* Advanced keyboard skills.
* Post-qualification specialist therapy/assessment training relevant to clinical health psychology.
* Post-qualification training or equivalent experience in supervision.
* Other academic qualifications to Masters or Doctorate level.

* Communicate diplomatically with staff from all disciplines.
* Interact effectively with people experiencing physical or mental ill health and their carers.

* Maintain concentration and able to sit for long periods.
* Comfortable dealing with uncertainty, lack of control, and end-of-life issues.
* Leadership experience within NHS clinical psychology services, contributing to policy and strategy development.


Disposition / Attitude / Motivation

* Capability to contribute to policy and service development.
* Act appropriately within professional guidelines and initiate action aligned with broad policies.
* Work well in a busy environment.
* Record of published work in peer‑reviewed or professional journals, books, or other outlets.
* Personal experience of formal personal growth facilitation or psychological therapy.

Salary: 57,528 to 64,750 a year, pro rata.
