Established in 1893 the Building Crafts College (BCC) is one of the country’s leading independent providers of specialist education and training in the building crafts, construction and conservation sector. We offer apprenticeships and diploma courses to a diverse population of approximately 400 students a year across a range of disciplines including Bench Joinery, Furniture Making and Design, Site Carpentry, Stonemasonry and Bricklaying.
We are now seeking to appoint a new workshop technician to join our team. Reporting to the Workshop Manager, the workshop technician will already be qualified and experienced in the operation of a wood machine mill and/or workshops. He or she should possess excellent communication, administration and interpersonal skills together with flexibility and a commitment to working proactively and creatively as part of a team are essential qualities for the role.
Assisting the Workshop Manager with the following.
# To assist with the day-to-day maintenance and safe working of specialist machinery for staff and students in the mills and/or workshops.
# To further develop the College’s sustainable wood management programme. To assist with College projects such as producing items in-house as required.
# To check that the workshop is tidy and ensure that extraction units are functioning properly.
# To ensure that waste is disposed of safely and is recycled where possible.
# To assist with the ongoing development of the mills and workshop environment.
# Interact with tutors/students – providing standardised materials, educating students during maintenance work.
# Inspection tasks – deep cleans when no students (holiday periods) occasional maintenance cover with other departments.
# 30 and to include final tidy up, shutting the main mill down, i.e. isolating individual machines, closing extraction gates, isolating the mill for the morning.
# To contribute to the general life of the College.
The successful candidate will have the following skills, experience and qualities:
Excellent wood machining skills and extensive knowledge of specialist wood machines and their maintenance and upkeep
Hold a relevant wood machining qualification.
Be open to completing a teaching qualification to support the delivery of staff and/or student training.
Ability to train in the maintenance of specialist wood machinery
Excellent organisational and planning skills with strong attention to detail and accuracy
A flexible, proactive approach to work with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
Strong IT skills to include MS Outlook, Word and Excel
An appreciation of College life, ideally in an inner-city FE setting
