To undertake all duties in line with the postholder's training and on instruction provided by the Management Team and General Practitioners.

To support new members of staff and nursing and medical students.

To be able to prioritise presenting problems in the treatment room, assess and plan an appropriate course of action, on a day-to-day or emergency situations.

Ability to use clinical systems and templates to record consultations.

Ability and confidence to work alone in the treatment room, seeking advice from colleagues/GPs where necessary.


Main duties of the job

Primary Duties and Areas of Responsibility

1. Assist at clinics, setting up and supporting other clinicians and ensuring patient care.
2. Conduct pre-clinic checks.
3. Conduct clinical observations such as weight and height measurements, test and record blood pressure and blood sugar levels.
4. Test and record results of clinical specimens.
5. Take and prepare clinical specimens for collection.
6. Provide assistance in minor operations, contraceptive implants and coil fittings.
7. Provide chaperone support.
8. Venepuncture.
9. NHS Health Checks.
10. Undertake dressings for wound and leg ulcer care.
11. Deliver injections to the practice population as per PGD/PSDs.
12. Ensure adequate infection control procedures in treatment and consulting rooms.
13. Ensure adequate stock levels in stock room, treatment rooms, fridges and cupboards.
14. Ordering medical supplies and checking/recording and storage of supplies on receipt.
15. Ensure the safe storage, recording, rotation and disposal of vaccines.
16. Log fridge temperatures, reporting any cold chain issues as necessary.
17. Assist with emergency patient situations, keeping updated with resuscitation skills.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

Some pharmacological knowledge required, especially relating to wound care/infection.

Knowledge of treatment room Patient Group Directives and associated policies.

Knowledge and understanding of patients with Long Term Conditions and acute illness presenting in the treatment room.

In the performance of the duties outlined in this Job Description, the postholder may have access to confidential information relating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcare workers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as a business organisation. All such information from any source is to be regarded as strictly confidential.

Information Governance

Employees are expected to adhere to NHS rules for computer IT governance and security.

Health and Safety/Risk Management

The post-holder must comply at all times with the Practice's Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures and reporting incidents using the organisation's Incident Reporting System.

The post-holder will comply with the Data Protection Act (1984) and the Access to Health Records Act (1990).

This description will be open to regular review and may be amended to take into account development within the Practice. All members of staff should be prepared to take on additional duties or relinquish existing duties in order to maintain the efficient running of the Practice.
