IM Recruitment Pack Sept

INDEPENDENT MEMBERS OF ROTHERHAM BOROUGH COUNCIL STANDARDS AND ETHICS COMMITTEE

* Would you like to play a critical role in the promotion of high ethical standards within the Borough?

* Are you able to bring an independent, informed and balance perspective to issues regarding the standards in public life?

If so, acting as an Independent Member of the Standards and Ethics Committee of Rotherham Borough Council may be for you.

Rotherham Borough Council has procedures to promote and maintain high standards of conduct of elected and co-opted members of the borough council and of town and parish councils within the borough. It also has procedures to investigate and determine allegations that the Code of Conduct for elected members has been breached.

The council is eager to ensure that standards of conduct are dealt with in a transparent manner. For this reason, there are 5 independent members who sit upon the Standards and Ethics Committee to advise (but they do not have a vote). Vacancies for 2 of the 5 independent co-opted members on the Standards Committee have arisen. The role of the independent member is to participate in the meetings of the Standards and Ethics Committee and sit on sub-committees which consider complaints that a breach of the Code of Conduct has occurred.

The person the council is seeking to appoint should have the following qualities:

* a keen interest in standards in public life
* a wish to serve the local community and uphold local democracy
* high standards of personal integrity
* the ability to be objective, independent and impartial and exercise sound judgment
* sound questioning, analytical and decision making skills
* good interpersonal skills

The appointment is for a term of four years. No allowance is payable.

Persons who are actively involved in local party politics are ineligible for appointment.

Persons interested in applying for this position should request an application pack from

Jillian Dimbleby –, PA to Phil Horsfield, Assistant Director of Legal, Registrars and Election Services, Riverside House, Main Street, Rotherham S60 1AE.

Anyone wishing to discuss the position before submitting an application should contact Stuart Fletcher, Deputy Monitoring Officer on

The closing date for applications is 30th September 2025.

Interviews will be arranged shortly thereafter.
