Would you like to specialise in the exciting field of critical care physiotherapy? And work in our recently built, state of the art critical care unit? Would you like to improve your specialist respiratory skills whilst delivering early rehab to optimise the recovery of patients with critical illness? Do you want an opportunity to develop your leadership skills?

Our critical care unit has 34 beds, with a high proportion of level 1 beds. Lancashire Teaching Hospitals are a regional centre for neurosciences and
vascular and a major trauma centre. These 3 specialties alone lead to a complex and interesting critical care caseload.

We are looking for a Physiotherapist who is experienced and highly motivated, to contribute to service development and create the best possible
outcomes for our patients. You should have transferrable skills in respiratory physiotherapy and rehabilitation. Skills in neuro-handling are
desirable, but you would be supported to develop these if required.

Main duties of the job

You will be welcomed into a supportive environment with a clear supervision structure through which personal and professional development isencouraged. You will have other opportunities to develop leadership skills and be able to lead and implement clinical service improvements and
seek opportunities for research developments to embed evidence-based practice.
You would also be responsible for supervising and supporting junior staff and students in their development within the wider department. There will be opportunitiesto develop your own teaching and educational development through case study presentations, attendance at advanced teaching sessions andsupport for research activity.

You must possess good communication, time-management, and interpersonal skills, and be motivated and able to work efficiently both alone andas part of an integrated team.
The Core Therapies department provides an emergency on call service and therapists will be expected to join the rota. We are also movingtowards 7 day working, and as such you will be expected to work flexibly to support this model of service delivery when it is implemented.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Duties will include, but not be limited to:
• To directly support the delivery of therapy to patients
• To provide leadership and management support
• To support personal and people development
• To communicate and collaborate with all Core Therapies Service stakeholders
• To support service development and planning
• To help to ensure the health, safety and security of users of the Core Therapies, self and colleagues
When you’re not treating patients you’ll have the opportunity to provide supervision and appraisal to our Band 5 colleagues, Therapy Assistants and Students. We work in a fast paced environment and can promise that you’ll never be bored orshort of things to do!


Person specification

Qualifications & Education

* HCPC registration
* Degree in Physiotherapy
* Evidence of CPD in respiratory
* Clinical Educator Course or qualification
* Member of the CSP
* Membership of appropriate specialist interest group
* Recent Clinical Educator experience
* Post graduate study in relevant area

Knowledge & Experience

* Experience working in an acute NHS setting as a Physiotherapist
* Proven varied experience of relevant rotational posts with a minimum of 18 months including critical care or acute respiratory setting
* On-call competence with recent on-call experience
* Range of transferable clinical skills from rotational posts
* Experience in managing complex patients
* Supervision of assistant staff/students
* Experience of MDT working
* Current knowledge of evidence based practice and research relating to Critical Care Physiotherapy
* Understanding of the regional and national drivers influencing the Critical Care service provision
* Experience at senior level of working in Critical Care (Band 6)

Skills and Abilities

* High level of communication skills
* High level of clinical reasoning skills
* High level of respiratory physiotherapy assessment and treatment skills
* Ability to prioritise a complex caseload
* Ability to work as part of an MDT
* Therapeutic moving and handling skills
* Participation in audit or research
* Professional leadership experience e.g. appraisal, team leadership
* Mentoring and coaching skills
* Presentation skills including at regional or national level
