Position Overview
The post is aimed at senior medical doctors in training (ST3+ or equivalent) and is designed around the needs of the modern medical registrar. It can be performed out of programme or recognised as training (contingent on Deanery approval). Successful applicants will develop a job plan with a senior Fellowship supervisor, comprising 80% clinical work and 20% leadership, research and quality improvement activities.
Key Responsibilities
* Clinical Work (80% of time)
o Ambulatory experience primarily across John Radcliffe Hospital, with potential activity in other acute and ambulatory medicine settings within the Trust.
o Short days, long days on call and out‑of‑hours weekend work.
o Contribution to the weekend rota and one late evening/long day per week; no overnight care beyond midnight or before 7 am.
o Collaboration with the Acute Hospital at Home pathways team.
* Leadership/Research/Quality Improvement (20% of time)
o Develop leadership skills and engage in projects on service development, working closely with the AAU clinical lead, matron and team.
o Embeds Trust’s vision of patient‑centred service transformation and aligns with Future Hospital Commission recommendations.
o Activities include developing and embedding ambulatory care pathways, evaluating care through outcome measures, supporting clinicians outside hospitals, introducing tele‑medicine systems, and engaging in the Resident Doctor Forum.
o Act as a point of escalation for Acute General Medicine and Geriatology issues within the resident doctor workforce.
Qualifications
* Essential criteria
o Full GMC registration and licence to practise; be fit to practice.
o Experienced in Acute medicine.
o ST4 and above.
o Should not hold a CCT.
o Satisfactory progress throughout training, including ARCP outcomes.
* Desirable criteria
o Additional degree (intercalated, masters or doctorate).
o Experience in management of frailty syndromes.
o Evidence of skills in management of acute medical emergencies (eg ALERT, IMPACT certification, ALS Instructor).
Clinical Skills – Essential Criteria
* Clinical competency in own medical specialty appropriate for their stage in training.
* Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems.
* Ability to prioritise clinical need.
* Ability to maximise safety and minimise risk.
* Ability to work without supervision where appropriate.
* Demonstrable experience in ambulatory care.
Clinical Skills – Desirable Criteria
* Demonstrable outcomes in ambulatory care.
* Experience in management of frailty syndromes.
* Evidence of skills in management of acute medical emergencies (eg ALERT, IMPACT certification, ALS Instructor).
Research – Essential Criteria
* Understanding of research, including awareness of ethical issues.
* Understanding of research methodology.
* Knowledge of evidence‑based practice.
Research – Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of involvement in a formal research project.
* Evidence of relevant academic achievements, including publications/presentations.
* Effective team working and leadership skills, supported by MSF or WBAs.
* Self‑awareness, with knowledge of personal strengths and weaknesses, impact and areas for development.
* Interest in and knowledge of the importance of leadership and management for clinicians.
Leadership & Management – Essential Criteria
* Effective leadership skills in and outside medicine (e.g., evidence of leading innovations or improvements).
* Understanding of NHS management and resources.
* Understanding of the local and national context in which the Trust operates, including economic and political influences.
* Understanding of clinical governance.
* Active involvement in QIP/audit, research or other activity that focuses on patient safety and clinical improvement and innovation.
* Interest in/knowledge of the delivery of safe, effective healthcare services.
Leadership & Management – Desirable Criteria
* Evidence of completed audit/Quality improvement projects.
* Evidence of learning about the principles of change management.
* Insight into issues facing UK healthcare services.
* Interest in and experience of teaching.
* Evidence of excellent feedback on teaching.
Teaching – Desirable Criteria
* Teaching diploma or degree.
* Development of teaching programmes.
* Participation in teaching courses.
* Clarity in written and spoken communication.
* Capacity to use logical/lateral thinking to solve problems/ make decisions, indicating an analytical/scientific approach and where appropriate, creativity in problem solving.
* Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively.
* Ability to work effectively under pressure.
* Capacity to manage conflicting demands.
* Self‑motivation, and resilience.
* Initiative and ability to work autonomously.
Other Desirable Criteria
* Leadership skills gained within the NHS or elsewhere.
* Writing experience: clinical and/or non‑clinical topics, peer‑reviewed publications and/or communication.
* Evidence of achievements outside medicine.
* Evidence of altruistic behaviour (e.g., voluntary work).
* Appropriate UK professional registration.
