An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Vascular Access Team at The Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust as a Healthcare Support Worker (Agenda for Change Band 3) for 37.5 hours per week. The post holder will receive comprehensive in‑service training to develop and maintain the technical, clinical and clerical skills required to safely perform venepuncture, intravenous cannulation and the collection of blood samples, including from PICC lines and selected paediatric patients. Working across wards, clinics and outpatient departments, you will play a vital role in supporting timely diagnosis and treatment by providing high‑quality blood samples in line with Trust policies and Standard Operating Procedures. Full training, supervision and ongoing development opportunities will be provided.
Job Responsibilities
* Deliver safe and efficient phlebotomy and cannulation service across wards, clinics and outpatient settings, including venepuncture, intravenous cannulation and blood sample collection.
* Ensure accurate patient identification and compliance with laboratory and blood transfusion procedures.
* Provide respectful, patient‑centred care and work autonomously within scope of practice.
* Communicate effectively with clinical and laboratory teams and adhere to Standard Operating Procedures, infection prevention, health and safety and incident reporting requirements.
* Manage stock control responsibilities and maintain accurate clinical records for all duties.
* Undertake education, audit and surveillance of vascular access on a weekly basis.
Person Specification
* Essential:
1. Care experience working in a health or social care setting. Care Certificate.
2. Completion of a clinical skills competency‑based workbook or equivalent vocational qualification level 3, or willingness to undertake.
3. GCSE Maths & English or equivalent functional skills level 2 in Maths & English, or willingness to undertake.
4. Confidentiality understanding of Information Governance.
5. Knowledge and understanding of Health and Safety.
6. Knowledge of clinical patient observations.
* Desirable:
o Knowledge and understanding of current healthcare issues.
o Experience with PICC line management and other vascular access procedures.
