SUMMARY OF POSITION:
The Auto Technician/Maintenance Specialist III is responsible for servicing, diagnosing, and repairing light and medium-duty vehicles and equipment, as well as performing basic maintenance tasks. Ensures all repairs meet quality standards, promotes workplace safety, and maintains accurate records of work completed. This role may also involve mentoring apprentice workers engaged in light-duty vehicle and equipment repair.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Conduct daily inspections of light-duty vehicles, including fueling, fluid checks, lights, tires, and safety inspections.
2. Schedule and perform routine preventive maintenance.
3. Perform minor and major repairs on light-duty vehicles and equipment, including electrical systems, drivetrains, suspension, engines, heating, and hydraulic systems.
4. Troubleshoot and diagnose drivability issues.
5. Operate diagnostic tools, electrical tools, air tools, and hand tools.
6. Perform welding, fabrication, and minor body work on vehicles and equipment as needed.
7. Maintain records, work orders, purchase requests, quotes, timesheets, and reports.
8. Attend safety meetings and training sessions to stay current on best practices and safety protocols.
9. Be available for non-traditional work schedules, including evenings, holidays, and weekends.
10. May be on 24-hour call for emergency repairs.
11. Operate vehicles to diagnose and ensure efficiency.
12. Keep equipment, tools, and work area organized and clean.
13. Support safe work practices in all activities.
14. Continuously build knowledge and skills relevant to the job.
15. Comply with college policies, procedures, laws, and regulations.
16. Perform other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:
* Knowledge of shop safety practices, PPE, and SDS.
* Ability to interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and manuals.
* Skill in diagnosing and repairing vehicles and equipment.
* Ability to work effectively in a multicultural environment and engage in Iupiaq cultural activities.
* Ability to pass a background check.
* Knowledge of post-secondary educational systems, North Slope Borough institutions, and Iupiaq culture and values.
* Ability to interpret and represent community and college values and actions.
* Support the mission of Ilisagvik College.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/EXPERIENCE [Required]:
* High school diploma or GED, or equivalent education and work experience.
* Associate of Applied Science in Automotive Technology or related field.
* Valid driver’s license.
* Minimum five years of automotive mechanic experience.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATES/TRAINING:
* Bachelor's degree or equivalent.
* Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to sit, stand, walk, handle objects, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, and occasionally climb or balance. Must be able to lift up to 40 pounds. Vision requirements include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:
