JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: Teacher - Post-Primary

REPORTS TO: Principal

PROFESSIONAL DUTIES OF A TEACHER

Regulations: Teachers’ (Terms and Conditions of Employment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1987, Schedule 3, Regulation 5


1. Exercise of general professional duties

A teacher who is not a principal shall carry out professional duties as circumstances require, including:

* if employed as a teacher in a school under the reasonable direction of the principal;
* if employed by a board on terms under which he/she is not assigned to any one school, under the reasonable direction of that board and of the principal of any school where he/she may work.


2. Exercise of particular duties

Teachers shall perform duties as directed by the principal or the board, including:

* performing specific duties reasonably assigned;
* contributing to the development of courses, teaching materials, and assessment methods;


3. Teaching and Planning

* Planning and preparing lessons and courses;
* Teaching pupils according to their educational needs, including setting and marking work;
* Assessing, recording, and reporting on pupils' development and progress.


4. General Responsibilities

* Promoting pupils' progress and well-being;
* Providing advice on educational and social matters, including future careers;
* Communicating with pupils' parents and external bodies;
* Participating in relevant meetings.


5. Assessment and Reporting

Providing assessments, reports, and references related to pupils, ensuring confidentiality where necessary.


6. Staff Development

* Participating in staff development schemes;
* Reviewing and improving teaching methods;
* Contributing to curriculum development and pastoral arrangements.


7. Discipline, Health, and Safety

* Maintaining good order and discipline;
* Safeguarding pupils' health and safety;
* Participating in curriculum and administrative meetings.


8. Public Examinations

Preparing pupils for exams, assessing, and supervising during exams.


9. Management Activities and Administration

* Contributing to staff recruitment and development;
* Managing and coordinating other teachers;
* Participating in curriculum review and administrative tasks.


10. Working Hours and Days

A full-time teacher shall work 195 days per year, with specific hours and break requirements, including supervision duties and attendance at school events.


11. Staff Cover

Providing cover for absent teachers within specified conditions based on school size and other factors.

This job description is subject to review and may include additional duties as required. The post-holder is expected to promote equality and good relations in accordance with Section 75 of the Northern Ireland Act (1998).


PERSON SPECIFICATION

Section 1 - Essential Criteria

* Qualifications: Teaching qualification recognized in Northern Ireland, Degree Level 6 in ICT.
* Experience: Teaching ICT at Key Stage 3/4/5 with positive outcomes; use of digital media in teaching.
* Other: Registration with GTCNI before appointment.


Section 2 - Additional Essential Criteria

* Knowledge of NI Curriculum, Safeguarding, SEND Code of Practice, ICT systems, assessment methods.
* Skills: Effective teaching, classroom management, inclusive environment, teamwork, communication.
* Values: Reflecting school’s values and ethos.


Section 3 - Desirable Criteria

* Experience: Minimum 3 months teaching ICT at KS3/4/5.
