Job Description
Who we are
We’re an interdisciplinary team of experts focused on solving critical challenges across our justice system. Our team draw their expertise from government, academia and the private sector.
The Justice AI Unit exists to make AI a core part of the justice system.
We do this by giving everyone safe access to the most powerful AI tools, building AI products to tackle specific problems, and setting out clear guidance on AI ethics and safety. We’re also empowering staff through training and upskilling, helping people across the justice system feel confident using these new technologies.
Most importantly, we’re encouraging a culture that embraces new ways of working.
The Role
As Head of Productivity Tools & Scaling, you'll help staff across the Ministry of Justice use AI tools safely and confidently. You'll set up elegant ways for people to learn about AI, test new ideas, and make sure that what works gets shared across the organisation. You'll also help us measure the impact AI is having – to our people, to the public, and to our services. You'll manage a small team to help with training, communications, and measuring the impact of new products. Working closely with senior leaders, you'll make sure AI becomes a useful, trusted part of how we work every day.
* Leading the creation of resources and engagement that enable the MoJ workforce to test and adopt AI in a scalable and secure environment. For example, identifying and promoting high value use cases that can help a large population of users across MoJ save time.
* Ensure AI training resources are accessible, relevant, and aligned with the needs of our people, supporting confident and responsible AI use across all levels.
* Enable our staff to understand and use clear guidance and governance to scale and adopt AI solutions responsibly, ensuring alignment with the AI usage policy and best practice.
* Promote best practices and share impactful use cases to inspire adoption and encourage innovative AI applications throughout the department.
* Develop a value framework to help the Justice AI Unit prioritise new AI work, balancing innovation with operational priorities, and informed by continuous evaluation of pilots and outcomes.
* Manage a team of 2–3 direct reports, providing leadership across the unit.
* Community Enablement: Responsible for creating engaging content to grow and energise the AI community and build a strong online network of AI champions across the department.
* Measurement and Impact Evaluation: Responsible analysing the data captured through surveys, AI usage and direct user engagement, and presenting trends and analysis in clear, actionable formats that support - and where necessary, challenge existing narratives.
* Engage senior stakeholders to drive delivery of the AI strategy, ensuring alignment with the MoJ’s wider transformation agenda.
Who You Are
This role requires:
* Proven experience leading digital transformation and change management initiatives, ideally within the public sector or justice system.
* Strong strategic thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to structure AI adoption across a complex organisation.
* Confidence in defining role-based AI usage - ensuring structured, scalable, and consistent AI adoption across different teams and functions.
* Excellent stakeholder engagement and communication skills, ensuring buy-in from leaders and frontline staff alike.
* Ability to translate AI technologies into practical use cases, balancing innovation with compliance and ethical considerations.
* Expertise in navigating complex government structures, ensuring alignment between AI adoption, strategic priorities, and governance requirements.
* Preferred: Evidence of delivering impactful AI projects in service transformation or public sector reform.
