Main Duties and Responsibilities of the Post
* Staff Management and Supervision
o Exercise strong clinical leadership to support and inspire colleagues, improve standards and quality and to develop professional practice.
o Be visible and accessible for all team members and other Heads of Department.
o Act as Team Leader within the nursing framework and work collaboratively with the multi-disciplinary team to ensure all staff development needs are maintained.
o Ensure adequate staffing levels and balanced cover to meet the patients' needs within the financial restraints placed on the unit budget.
o Coordinate the nursing teams in providing care for the patients with the ward.
o Ensure annual staff Development Reviews for all staff.
o Monitor and manage sickness absence within the team.
o Ensure annual leave is taken and cover is maintained.
o Lead in selection and recruitment of staff within each ward.
o Ensure safe practices are in place and act on areas of concern e.g. Health and Safety.
o Ensure staff rota covers the wards’ needs in line with resource requirements.
* Financial Management
o To manage the ward's current budgets.
o Encourage awareness of financial constraints during daily work and adhere to them.
o Adhere to financial constraints related to ad-hoc usage of temporary staff.
o Meet monthly with the service manager to discuss budgets and identify potential cost pressures or savings.
* Quality and Standards
o Responsible for infection control including audits, best practice and use of protocols within the ward environment.
o Responsible for ward cleanliness in association with Initial Services.
o Handle complaints from patients, members of the public and staff in accordance with the Trust's Policies and Procedures.
o Implement policies and propose changes to practice and procedure for own area.
o Contribute to policy and practice changes arising from audits and complaints.
o Investigate complaints and prepare a structured response following the investigation of complaints or clinical incidents.
o Evaluate the service against national and international benchmarks and promote improvements in services.
o Set, monitor, audit and lead on appropriate practice protocols and standards within the Trust's clinical governance framework; undertake clinical audits and surveys to maintain best practice.
o Play a key role in clinical governance by providing expert advice and liaising with other disciplines and organisations.
o Participate in clinical audits and review results affecting own area and patient care.
o Provide leadership in evaluating service against national benchmarks, including Essence of Care and NHS plans.
o Deputise for the Service Manager at clinical meetings.
* Training, Research and Development
o Maintain the correct educational environment for student nurses and other learners and collate yearly learning needs analysis.
o Participate in student assessment and liaise with educational staff where appropriate.
o Act as an effective role model/mentor/preceptor.
o Organise and participate in the orientation/induction of new staff to the ward.
o Lead ward and trust teaching programmes.
o Act as a resource and advisor to junior colleagues in delivering research-based programmes of care, ensuring appropriate assessment, planning and evaluation.
o Initiate research within the ward environment.
* Professional Responsibilities
o Maintain high standards of communication and collaboration with the multi-professional network.
o Ensure nursing records and documentation are completed accurately and legibly to meet legal requirements.
o Maintain and develop own professional practice, keeping abreast of new developments clinically and professionally.
o Maintain knowledge on administration of drugs and ensure a structured training programme is rolled out to all nurses in the area.
o Maintain a personal professional development record.
o Advise the appropriate person of any change in circumstances affecting patient care.
o Act in accordance with the NMC Code of Professional Conduct at all times.
o Provide a role in Hospital Major Incident Plan.
o Manage beds on a day-to-day basis.
* Communication and Working Relationships
o Liaise with other care providers pre-admission and discharge to optimise ward bed usage and inform stakeholders of ward role and dimensions.
o Hold and chair monthly ward meetings.
o Coordinate as lead for patient, relative and carer enquiries.
o Maintain regular contact with Trust nursing staff, consultants, older person services, senior management, social care, voluntary and independent organisations, and academic institutions.
o Demonstrate well-developed negotiating skills and clear, confident communication in demanding situations.
o Receive sensitive and complex information concerning patients' medical conditions and health needs.
o Utilise persuasive and reassurance skills as required.
o Establish networking influences locally, regionally and nationally to promote ongoing team development.
* Vulnerable Adults, Children and Young People
o All staff have a duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of vulnerable adults, children and young people in relevant areas of work, including training and safeguarding compliance.
* Clinical Obligations
o If statutory/professional registration is required, maintain it at all times.
o Maintain ongoing professional development to meet registration requirements.

o Adhere to national guidelines and infection control best practices.
o Comply with the Trust's clinical policies and governance structures.
o Participate in the Trust's clinical governance framework.
* Job and Development Review
