Clinical Nurse Specialist Anterior Segment
The Clinical Nurse Specialist Anterior Segment role requires specialised knowledge of anterior segment ophthalmology, with emphasis on cornea and cataract. Working closely with Consultants, Clinical Leads and an Optometrist Lead, the specialist will manage a caseload of patients autonomously, ensuring high‑quality, evidence‑based care.
Responsibilities
* Practice autonomously as an advanced clinical practitioner, making critical decisions and managing patient care delivery.
* Lead and educate within cataract and cornea clinics, providing specialist nursing advice, assessment and patient/carer education.
* Obtain informed consent for procedures in line with Trust policies, and act as the patient’s advocate in multi‑professional teams.
* Manage caseloads, including cataract referrals, ensuring timely patient reviews and adherence to NHS targets.
* Contribute to nursing innovations (e.g., nurse‑led high‑volume low‑complexity cataract clinics) and support extended roles such as counselling and consenting.
* Maintain accurate records using NHS software, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with data protection policies.
* Respond to telephone and e‑mail enquiries, coordinate appointment changes, and investigate complaints.
* Participate in audit, governance, and continuous professional development activities.
* Administer medicines under Patient Group Directions or as a non‑medical prescriber where applicable.
Qualifications
* Registered nurse (level 1)
* Evidence of continuous professional development
* Re‑recognised qualification course in Ophthalmology (optional)
* Non‑medical prescriber qualification (optional)
Person Specification
Essential
* Previous teaching and mentoring experience
* Previous experience in an ophthalmology department, minimum 3 years in Ophthalmology
* Working knowledge of clinical governance, audit and ability to interpret and implement results
* Level 1 registered nurse and evidence of continuous professional development
Desirable
* Leadership course or skills
* Slit lamp skills
* Experience working as a nurse practitioner/specialist
* Recognised qualification course in Ophthalmology (Ophthalmic course)
* Non‑medical prescriber qualification
