About the Academy
Outwood Academy Ormesby can be found in the town of Middlesbrough in the north-east of England. Our goal is to continuously improve and become a leading academy in the region.
Through strong leadership, we empower our staff to excel and ensure that students receive the best possible education and outcomes. The academy provides an excellent environment for professional development and making a positive impact on the lives of students in the area.
At our academy, we have highly trained staff and effective safeguarding measures in place to support all staff members. Additionally, the SLT and staff work together effectively to ensure that all students are actively engaged in their education.
About the Role
We are looking for an energetic, enthusiastic and inspiring classroom practitioner with a real passion for Geography. We offer an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and motivated team. An excellent knowledge and understanding of the subject is essential. You must possess the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of 'students first'. Applications are invited from both newly qualified and experienced professionals.
As a subject teacher you will be required to complete the professional duties that are expected of a UK qualified Teacher in accordance with academy policies and procedures and your subject specialism.
The role will be temporary in the first instance for maternity cover, with a view to this becoming a permanent appointment in time.
You should promote the achievement of high standards through effective teaching and learning within your subject area, including the preparation, application and development of lesson resources in alignment with the curriculum, as directed by your department head and senior leaders within the academy.
You will be responsible for effective classroom management and the coordinator of class work with any classroom support staff that are present. You must evaluate lessons and incorporate student views and responses to reflect and identify areas of development.
About the Department
The Ormesby Humanities Department is a welcoming and sociable department of 4 staff (2 historians and 2 geographers) who are all extremely passionate about their subject specialisms. Our department is well respected within the Academy and is located centrally, with all classrooms close together. All the Geography classrooms are resourced with interactive whiteboards, visualisers and ample storage which will enable you to teach in a variety of ways. In addition to this we share a small workroom with several computers, fridge, kettle and nearly always a selection of snacks And if snacks and a fridge aren't what you are looking for, we also have a range of teaching and learning books to support professional development, as well as a selection of subject books and subscriptions to professional organisations such as Hodder - Wide World magazine.
Wellbeing and management of workload is a priority for the department and we work collaboratively whenever possible and often share resources and planning. We all want the best for our students and by sharing expertise and best practices we believe we can achieve this. We support each other whenever we can which includes support with planning, marking and sometimes even teaching. As a team we share the view that whilst our job is often challenging, we do it because it is hard and because of the positive impact we have on our amazing students day in, day out.
We are incredibly proud of our geography curriculum at Outwood Academy Ormesby. KS3 follows a 3 year programme of study with the aim to develop critical thinking skills, an understanding of the world around them, skills for employability as well as a genuine love of Geography. KS3 geographers are taught 2 hours a week in year 7, 1 hour in year 8 and 2 hours in year 9. In geography we go beyond the demands of the National Curriculum and regularly provide challenging enquiries and local studies to engage our students and develop them as global citizens. At GCSE the geography team we follow AQA. The units covered are Paper 1: Natural Hazards, Living World (Hot Deserts), Coasts and Rivers; Paper 2: Urban, Economic Change; Resource Management and Water; Paper 3: Pre-Release and Fieldwork.
The leadership of the department is overseen by a Head of Department based at a school within our community. It may therefore be required that part of your week will be based in another academy.
We look forward to welcoming applications from candidates who will help us in achieving the best possible outcomes for our amazing students.
