Offer description

British Triathlon is the National Governing Body for triathlon in Great Britain, with a mission to grow participation, deliver high-performance success, and ensure the sport is governed with transparency, inclusivity and integrity.

Key Responsibilities

* Provide high-level mentoring and support to the Board, Performance Director and wider Executive Team on performance programs and pathways.
* Contribute to the development and oversight of Olympic/Paralympic Games preparation strategies (including selection processes) and long-term athlete/coach/support staff development and welfare.
* Ensure safeguarding, athlete welfare and sport integrity are embedded in all performance systems.
* Together with the Chair and other British Triathlon Board members, provide support to, and act as a sounding board for, the CEO and wider Executive Team on performance programmes and strategies.
* Chair from time to time the Safeguarding Committee and sit on any internal athlete appeal processes (note, most appeals processes proceed direct to Sport Resolutions UK so this will be limited in scope).
* Uphold the principles of good governance, as set out in the Code for Sports Governance, and ensure alignment with funder expectations (e.g. Sport England, UK Sport).
* Act as an advocate for the organisation’s values, promoting transparency, inclusion, and a positive impact through sport.

Key Skills, Experience and Qualifications Required

* Experience of working within a high-performance/elite sporting field – ideally involving delivery at major sporting events – in a leadership role (coaching, technical or operational).
* Sport welfare and safeguarding experience at both operational and strategic levels;
* Experience of operating at Board level, with sound understanding of governance responsibilities and the ability to contribute constructively and independently.
* Commercially savvy, with the ability to contribute to Board discussions on income generation, sponsorship, events, and financial sustainability models.
* An understanding of the challenges and opportunities within the UK sporting landscape, including public funding models.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build trusted relationships and influence diverse stakeholders.
* An understanding and acceptance of the legal duties, responsibilities, and liabilities of a Company Director.
* An understanding of the international sports landscape, with any language capability a bonus.
* Whilst an understanding of triathlon is not essential, a willingness and curiosity to learn about our sport is.

Behavioural Competencies and Qualities Required

* Strategic perspective, vision, and ability to work positively within a team.
* Drive and commitment and the aptitude to demonstrate this to others.
* Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills and the ability to develop effective, sustainable relationships across all stakeholders, including Board members.
* A commitment to the values and behaviours of British Triathlon.
* Selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership (Nolan Principles).
* A commitment to the sport of triathlon and its power to inspire.
* Strong intellect and analytical skills; emotional intelligence; innovative thinker, and ability to focus on the issues to be dealt with.

Time Commitment

The Board meets four times per year and the Safeguarding & Welfare Committee around four times per year, with additional committee participation and ad hoc strategic support required. Board meetings are normally held face to face at least twice a year (usually in London, but may be in other major UK cities), and hybrid (online and in Loughborough) at other times. Meetings usually last 4-5 hours, with additional preparatory time required prior to each Board and Committee meeting to review the papers. It is estimated your time commitment would be at least 2 days a month / 24 days per year.

Directors Obligations

* Attend all Board meetings called during the year, unless prevented by exceptional circumstances.
* Attend the Annual General Meeting.
* Act as a member of such Committees of the Board as the Board shall decide, attending all meetings, unless prevented by exceptional circumstances.
* Invest sufficient time to ensure they have fully understood all aspects of British Triathlon, including attending events, meeting with partners, and engaging with the Director of Finance, as may be reasonably required to enable the Director to discharge their duties.
* Ensure they have sufficient time to undertake this role.
