We have exciting plans for growth and are looking for an enthusiastic and skilled NGS laboratory scientist to join the microbiome diagnostics team. You will be the core of the NGS laboratory team, responsible for progressing all microbiome testing samples through the sequencing workflow, including overseeing our technicians' work. We continuously develop our laboratory capabilities, and you will also be responsible for development and refinement of state-of-the-art sequencing protocols. You will play a vital role in the management and administration of the sequencing laboratory, planning to ensure our processes run reliably and safely.

Your role is central to our company's plans and our ambition to become the leading microbiome lab in the UK; we will support your personal development and ensure your role grows to match challenge and grow your capabilities.

The role:

1. Contribute to microbiome projects by using Illumina sequencing technologies to generate metagenomic and genomic data from a variety of sample types.
2. Build and manage a technical team and ensure the smooth running of laboratory facilities.
3. Investigate, develop & onboard newly implemented and/or standard sequencing workflows and experimental techniques.
4. Ensure all equipment is operational by arranging service contracts, repairs, and carrying out monitoring and regular maintenance of equipment.
5. Carry out pre and post run QC interpretation and troubleshoot sequencing library preparation and sequencing runs.
6. Collaborate with our bioinformatic and automation experts in the R&D team to help design novel sample analysis approaches.
7. Support the training of technical and non-expert colleagues in NGS technologies.
8. Contribute to the development of other microbiome diagnostic products with the rest of the R&D team.

Must have:

1. Minimum of 5 years lab experience in the fields of genomics, genetics, or similar. This can be from a PhD in a relevant subject or equivalent industry experience with significant expertise in NGS.
2. Hands-on experience in microbiome sequencing.
3. Experience in lab management, from inventory to people and everything in between.
4. Delivery of results and implementation of new ideas with excellent troubleshooting skills.
5. Ability to perform a wide range of molecular biology techniques such as nucleic acid isolation, multiplex PCR, and RT-PCR.
6. Excellent communication skills for interpretation and reporting of NGS data.
7. Excellent organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to prioritise, define timelines, multitask, and deliver to these commitments.
8. Motivation and ambition to make a personal contribution to research.
9. Good attention to detail and record keeping, in keeping with our UKAS accreditation standard.
10. Demonstration of inclusivity and respect for all.

Nice to have:

1. Experience with high-throughput automated sequencing workflows from sample input to data quality control.
2. Experience with training non-specialists and equipping junior colleagues with knowledge they need to do their day-to-day job.
3. Technical experience running multiple sequencing platforms and technologies such as Illumina NextSeq, Oxford Nanopore, PacBio.
4. Experience of using NGS in clinical diagnostics.
5. Experience maintaining and troubleshooting Illumina sequencing runs.
6. Well versed in performing and reporting the standard QCs in NGS workflows.
