Technical Instructor

This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference to patients’ lives and to be part of a platinum accredited service providing excellent patient care.


Job Purpose

To provide both clinical and administrative support to other team members and carry own caseload under the guidance of qualified allied healthcare professionals.


Job Summary

Assist qualified allied health professionals—occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians and speech and language rehabilitation—in a variety of settings. Work without direct supervision within a specified clinical area while performing tasks of assessment and treatment of own caseload as delegated by a qualified allied health professional.

* Pre‑screen patients including gathering information, blood pressure monitoring and performing delegated outcome measure testing.
* Act as first contact in certain situations.
* Assist in delegated data collection.
* Communicate with relevant medical and nursing staff, social workers, other health care professionals, patient relatives and carers regarding patient care.
* Accompany patients on home visits prior to discharge and communicate with relatives and carers about treatment continuation at home.
* Work within a 7‑day service.


Specific Clinical Duties

* Work without direct supervision but under the direction of qualified staff to perform specific tasks for individuals or groups, including out‑of‑home services as a lone worker.
* Be responsible for a designated caseload of patients, organizing this efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and time use.
* Undertake routine assessment of patients using investigative and analytical skill under guidance of a qualified allied health professional.
* Formulate standard individual management and/or treatment programmes under guidance of a qualified therapist.
* Carry out rehabilitation programmes with the multidisciplinary team toward patient‑focused goals agreed within the team.
* Contribute to discharge planning process in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe and effective discharge.
* Maintain comprehensive and accurate assessment and treatment records in line with legal, departmental and Trust requirements; communicate outcomes appropriately in letters and reports.
* Maintain a high standard of clinical care.
* Teach the use of walking aids, exercise equipment and adaptations; assess and teach safety factors.
* Use video filming or photography as part of assessment and outcome measure.
* Update patient records and be responsible for regular safety checks of equipment.


Education & Training

* Attend organised training sessions, including all mandatory Trust training and any appropriate in‑service training arranged by the service.
* Participate in the appraisal system and Personal Development Programme.
* Maintain own continuing professional development (CPD).
* Develop and enhance skills and incorporate them into everyday practice.
* Maintain a portfolio reflecting personal development.
* Develop links with other therapy support staff for peer support and training.
* Identify and meet objectives for personal development together with qualified staff.
* Provide advice, teaching and instruction to patient relatives, carers and other professionals.
* Be involved in the training, development and supervision of therapy and rehabilitation support staff.


Requirements

* Full UK driving licence.
* Access to a cart for regular business use.
* Qualified to carry out assessment and treatment in a community setting.

Responsible to: Senior Therapist
Accountable to: Therapy Manager

Patients, family, carers, doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, dietitians, speech and language therapists, clinical psychologists, adult care services, voluntary sector, Hertfordshire wheelchair service, Hertfordshire equipment services.
