Job Overview
We are seeking a Consultant Stroke Physician to join our established stroke department at North Bristol NHS Trust to contribute to the growth and strategic development of our services. Our focus is on improving acute stroke services for Bristol, North Somerset, and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG), with support extended to the wider Severn Region and beyond, including advanced procedures like Mechanical Thrombectomy (performed 24/7).
Since May 2023, our Comprehensive Stroke Centre, based at the Brunel Building, Southmead Hospital, has been central to stroke care in the region, with expansion of our hyperacute stroke unit (HASU) and acute stroke unit (ASU). We deliver the highest number of thrombectomies in the UK.
The successful candidate will have responsibilities including supporting the delivery of acute services, involvement in Mon-Fri transient ischaemic attack (TIA) clinics, and handling ward referrals at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Participation in bi-weekly ward consultant rounds at the Stroke Sub Acute Rehab Unit (SSARU) at Weston General Hospital is expected.
This position offers an opportunity to contribute to an evolving landscape in stroke care, building on high quality care and collaborating as a team to enhance stroke services and patient outcomes.
Main duties of the job
Clinical duties
* Management of acute admissions - thrombolysis and thrombectomy.
* Supervising the care of all patients in HASU and ASU, with colleagues providing continuity of care.
* Providing bi-weekly Consultant level input to patients cared for in the SSARU at Weston General Hospital / South Bristol Community Hospital.
* Delivery of TIA (at Bristol Royal Infirmary) / neurovascular outpatient clinics.
Supervision and education
* Clinical and educational supervision of juniors including senior clinical fellows.
* Contribution to training and education of the stroke team.

Applicants should have a CCT or be within six months of achieving this at the date of interview or be listed on the GMC’s specialist register to be eligible for application for a substantive post. CESR applicants are welcome and must have their CESR in place at the time of interview.
Working for our organisation
The Stroke Department is a major part of the Regional Neurosciences Centre. It provides inpatient and outpatient specialist stroke services including:
* 24-hour acute thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy
* Hyperacute and acute stroke care
* TIA clinics at Bristol Royal Infirmary
* Sub-acute stroke rehabilitation at South Bristol Community Hospital and Weston General Hospital
The Stroke Department provides all stroke services within NBT, with a large team of consultants from Neurology, Acute Medicine and Care of the Elderly backgrounds, leading the Trust’s Comprehensive Stroke Centre for both acute and rehabilitation services. Hyperacute and acute services are supported 24/7 by a specialist team of Stroke Advanced Nurse Practitioners. We have invested in Advanced Clinician Practitioners (ACPs) and Physician Associates.

The successful applicant will be a team player and willing to work flexibly to provide cover for other consultants who cover the Stroke Services. The successful applicant can be from any parent specialty but must have experience in stroke care. The job plan and clinic commitment will be adapted to suit the appointee. Please discuss interests with our Specialty Lead before application; neurology, care of the elderly and acute medicine PAs may form part of the job plan for successful candidates. The essential requirement is that the appointee be expert in the care and management of people with stroke in all phases of their care and be committed to building a stroke centre of excellence in patient care and research. Qualification and Registration
Essential criteria
* MRCP or equivalent
* Maintain Full registration with the GMC
* Must have CCT entered on the GMC Specialist Register at the time of appointment. Specialist registrars that do not hold a CCT must be due to be awarded one within 6 months of the interview date.
Desirable criteria
* Higher academic qualification e.g. MD or MS
* CCT in Stroke Medicine
Training + Experience
Essential criteria
* Recent experience and familiarity with UK hospital systems and practices (or equivalent)
* Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in General and Geriatric Medicine or Neurology or Acute Medicine
* Training in diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular conditions
Desirable criteria
* Experience in thrombectomy referral management
Training, management+audit
Essential criteria
* Evidence of recent CME / reasonable training progression at this stage of career
* Experience in audit projects and written up
* Knowledge of contemporary NHS management issues
Desirable criteria
* Completion of a general management course or programme
