Job Description
As a Data Protection Adviser, you will serve as a specialist, providing expert advice on personal data matters. Your role is crucial in helping the Environment Agency meet legal obligations and embed data protection across the organization.
Under the guidance of the Data Protection Manager, you will work independently within established practices, interpreting legislation, assessing risks, and resolving data protection issues to support business delivery and our environmental mission.
The responsibilities include:
* Providing expert advice on data protection compliance, risks, and best practices
* Managing requests related to data rights and information requests
* Investigating data security incidents and advising on mitigation strategies
* Developing and maintaining policies, procedures, and training on data handling
* Supporting teams to implement data protection by design and default
* Building relationships with stakeholders and external networks
* Leading or contributing to projects related to data protection and governance
Responding to incidents is a key part of the role, with potential additional payments and training for incident response duties.
The team, part of Knowledge and Information Management, works across the country to manage information effectively and sustainably. We are a supportive and friendly group committed to making a difference.
Experience and Skills Required
Essential:
* Recognized data protection qualification (e.g., BCS, IAPP, PDP)
* Practical knowledge and experience in data protection
* Attention to detail and ability to work efficiently under pressure
* Strong organizational skills and adaptability
* Excellent communication and coaching abilities
* Stakeholder engagement skills
* Commitment to quality and continuous improvement
* Team-oriented approach
Desirable:
* Experience in project management, information governance, risk and compliance
* Experience in the public sector or with SharePoint
* Creative problem-solving skills
