Role Overview
Transformer Designer HVDC Simulations Expert. Lead electrical design of large power transformers for HVAC and HVDC applications for GE Vernova's Electrification team in Stafford, UK. Manage full design process, including customer specification review, detailed transformer design, 3D/2D FEA, simulations, factory & supplier support, design reviews, and product improvement initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
* Design electrical transformer solutions for HVAC and, preferably, HVDC up to 800 kV.
* Perform short circuit, lightning impulse, thermal, and other related design calculations.
* Conduct detailed transformer design and advise Drawing Office on best practices.
* Use 3D FEA, 2D FEA, thermal, or electromagnetic analysis to support design decisions and solve technical problems.
* Collaborate with Transformer Manufacturing to resolve manufacturing issues and develop best practices.
* Support tender and contract design projects while balancing product performance, project cost, and time to market.
* Communicate with other transformer teams to apply consistent standards and best practices.
* Represent GE Vernova in technical capacity during customer design reviews and approval meetings.
* Contribute to product improvement and cost‑out initiatives to enhance competitiveness and engineering value.
Qualifications
* Strong technical background in electrical transformer engineering for HVAC and preferably HVDC.
* Experience reviewing customer requirements, preparing design information, and participating in technical reviews.
* Knowledge of short circuit, lightning impulse, thermal, and other electrical design considerations.
* Experience with finite element electrostatic/electromagnetic modelling is an advantage.
* Expertise in engineering technology and product definition; advanced experience in transformer design or related electrical design work.
* Familiarity with PDM systems (Windchill or similar) and CAD tools (AutoCAD, Inventor) preferred.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills with ability to analyse and resolve problems.
* Organised approach to planning, documenting, and delivering engineering work.
* University Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field (preferred but not mandatory; experience and achievements weigh more).
