Speciality Doctor in Ophthalmology

The closing date is 22 March 2026

An opportunity has arisen in the Ophthalmology team to meet activity demands across all areas of the service. You will therefore be expected to deliver a level of General Ophthalmology. The job plan is yet to be confirmed but will require some Direct Clinical Care sessions at the Royal Derby Hospital site and peripheral site.


Main duties of the job

Ophthalmology is predominantly based at the Royal Derby Hospital and Queens Hospital, Burton. The appointment is subject to the National Terms and Conditions of Service for Specialty Doctors (2021).

Applicants must hold MBBS or an equivalent medical qualification together with the Diploma in Ophthalmology or a higher qualification.

Full Registration with the GMC and a licence to practice at time of application is essential.

Job responsibilities

This is not a training post but appointed doctors will be supported to achieve the competencies and requirements for specialty registration through CESR route. They can approach the department to discuss their needs in advance.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Eligibility

* MBBS / MBChB or equivalent
* Life Support Qualifications (BLS, ALS, PBLS)
* Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice at time of application
* Additional higher medical/scientific degree relevant to the specialty


Clinical Knowledge and Skills

* Completed at least four years' full-time postgraduate training or equivalent in Ophthalmology
* Up to date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty and evidence of an understanding of its application
* Experienced in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need
* Demonstrates awareness of good decision making. Aware of own limitations. Track record of engaging in clinical governance: reporting errors, learning from errors
* Proven ability to work effectively in different clinical settings required in the job
* Minimum 1 year NHS experience


Management and admin experience

* Commitment to Continuing Professional Development and the requirements of clinical governance, reporting errors and learning from these
* Evidence of leadership skills


Language and Communication skills

* Evidence of ability to work as part of an MDT, sharing administrative duties
* Experience of formal presentations
* 360‑degree feedback and patient survey feedback and reflections


Teaching experience, audit and research

* Evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students
* Experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP)
* Evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence‑based research into every day clinical practice
* Evidence of relevant academic and research achievements relevant to the specialty
* Any teaching courses or qualifications.
* Experience of teaching basic clinical skills to under‑graduates
* Caring attitude to patients and carers
* Enquiring critical approach to work
* Personal integrity and reliability
* Willingness to innovate and develop new methods
* Ability to cope with difficult and demanding situations
* Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional or national levels
