We are seeking Medical Microbiologists to join our team of four consultants in the Microbiology Department at Great Western Hospitals.
The appointees will cover a total of 13 PAs across one or two posts, with flexible division depending on individual preferences. We aim to expand our microbiology services over the next year and are particularly interested in candidates trained in infectious diseases and medical microbiology who are keen to lead service improvements and transformation for patient benefit.
Great Western Hospitals (GWH) is part of the South 4 Pathology Partnership, collaborating closely with Oxford University Hospitals, Buckinghamshire Healthcare, and Milton Keynes. The role offers opportunities to develop strong professional relationships, engage in academic research, and participate in ongoing CPD activities. Support and mentoring for early career consultants can also be arranged if desired.
The role includes leadership responsibilities in infection management, providing comprehensive infection services involving clinical care and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams including microbiologists, GUM physicians, respiratory specialists, GPs, pharmacists, IPC nurses, and health protection teams.
Regular visits to departments such as ICU, Haematology/Oncology, and surgical units, as well as participation in relevant committees and MDTs, are expected. There is scope to develop sub-specialty interests aligned with the Trust’s strategic goals.
Teaching, examinations, accreditation duties, and contributions to medical education are integral parts of the role.

All consultants will contribute to:
* Supervision of diagnostic methods and specimen examination.
* Result interpretation and authorization.
* Policy and SOP development.
* Quality assurance and external accreditation processes, including UKAS ISO15189 and IDPS services.
* Business planning, including evaluating new methods and planning for future staffing and equipment needs.
