This is an exciting opportunity to join a large and innovative team within County Durham and Darlington, with approximately 4,200 deliveries per year across both sites.
We are looking to recruit a Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist. This is a permanent post. We seek someone with generalist skills, with opportunities and support to develop further through collaboration with specialists. ATSMs in benign abdominal surgery, hysteroscopy, TOP, and advanced AN care are particularly welcomed.
The post involves weekly gynaecology and ANC clinics, as well as a Caesarean section list. Gynaecology clinics will include diagnostic and surgical hysteroscopy, with opportunities for theatre sessions either supervised or independent based on experience. The daytime Labour Ward involves a 24-hour shift approximately once every three weeks, with split weekends on the rota.
Main duties of the job
Conduct weekly ANC, diagnostic, and treatment gynaecology clinics, provide advice and guidance to GPs, and participate in triage. Additional specialist clinics or sessions are negotiable based on interests, experience, and departmental needs (e.g., Vulval clinic, menstrual disorders clinic, TOP service, Caesarean section list). Perform gynaecology theatre sessions, either independently or supervised, depending on experience. Participate in obstetric and gynaecology on-call duties.
The post involves participation in the Tier 3 non-resident on-call rota at Darlington Memorial Hospital, currently at a 1:11 frequency. The postholder will also provide educational supervision for resident doctors, deliver teaching sessions, and support undergraduate teaching.

Job responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
Assess individual care needs, develop, implement, and evaluate patient care with the multidisciplinary team.
Maintain effective communication with patients and families, providing relevant information about care and treatment.
Keep administrative duties up to date.
Prioritize work to ensure effective and safe patient care.
The majority of activity will be based at UHND and surrounding community sites.
Provide specialist obstetrics and gynaecology services across the Trust.
Perform diagnostic and emergency gynaecology surgery depending on experience and skills.
Attend Evidence-Based Guidelines meetings, review, and update obstetrics and gynaecology protocols.
Work effectively within a multidisciplinary team, leading and developing services.
Undertake clinical shifts, including participation in out-of-hours and weekend rotas, under the direction of the Clinical Director.
Conduct regular clinical reviews, ensuring accurate documentation and discharge summaries.
Manage outpatient referrals and support multidisciplinary care coordination.
Provide leadership and mentorship to trainees and colleagues.
Cover colleagues during leave or sickness.
Person Specification
Experience
* ATSM or equivalent in Advanced Labour Ward Practice.
* ATSM or equivalent in gynaecology-related areas.
* ATSM or equivalent in TOP.
* ATSM or equivalent in benign gynaecological surgery.
* ATSM or equivalent in hysteroscopy.
* Interest in education.
Qualifications
* Valid GMC registration.
* Membership of RCOG or equivalent.
* Relevant CCT or equivalent (to be confirmed by PMETB/GMC by the AAC date).
* On the specialist register or within 6 months of admission.
* Additional relevant training or degrees.
* Management training.
