Job Title: Pollutions Control Lead

Location: Durrington, Worthing (Occasional working at our Falmer office)

Perm/FTC: Permanent

Hours: 38 hrs per week

Salary: £35k based on skills and experience - plus 15% shift allowance

About the role

The Pollutions Control Lead drives response to faults and issues which have a heightened risk of impacting the environment, by directing different teams and processes to an effective resolution. Southern Water has some of the largest stretches of bathing water in the South, therefore we have an obligation to minimise risk and ensure that pollution is kept to a minimum.

You will be involved in high level incident coordinating and support resource for controllers. Whilst monitoring alarm mistakes, performance issues or deterioration, coordinate resources to resolve issues and establish contact with consistency and continuity. You will carry out overnight site compliance checks and report performance and arrange site visits. You will achieve your goals by being an individual who is data driven, inquisitive, and someone who will use these skills to effectively monitor site trends. As part of the Control Centre function, you will play a central role in coordinating environmental incident response, supporting controllers, and ensuring robust protection of our sites and surrounding ecosystems.

What you will be responsible for:


You’ll act as the key driver for effective response to pollution risks, coordinating teams and resources, monitoring performance, and ensuring environmental compliance.

Your responsibilities includes:

1. Overseeing and coordinating response to faults or issues with heightened environmental risk
2. Providing high‑level incident support and acting as a resource for controllers
3. Monitoring alarm mistakes, performance deterioration, and site trends to prevent pollution events
4. Coordinating resources to achieve timely and effective issue resolution
5. Completing overnight site compliance checks, reporting findings, and arranging follow‑up visits
6. Using data‑driven insights to identify patterns and support continuous improvement

Additional requirements specific to the role:

You would need to commit to the following shift pattern:

7. 3 days on, 7 days off
8. 4 days on, 7 days off
9. 3 nights on, 7 days off
10. 4 nights on, 7 days off
11. Includes standby shifts (details provided at interview)
12. Occasional requirement to work from the Falmer office
13. Fast‑paced, reactive working environment

What you’ll bring to the role:

Essential:

14. Strong analytical and data‑driven approach
15. Experience or interest in environmental protection, utilities, or regulatory environments
16. Ability to thrive in a reactive and fast‑paced operational setting
17. Strong coordination, communication, and problem‑solving skills

Desirable:

18. Qualification in environmental science
19. Experience working with an environmental regulator
20. Background within the utilities sector
