Senior Freight Coordinator
Overview
We are seeking an experienced Senior Freight Coordinator to manage inbound freight operations within our retail supply chain. This role is responsible for ensuring the timely, cost-effective movement of merchandise from suppliers (local and international) to distribution centres. The Senior Freight Coordinator will play a critical role in maintaining stock availability, minimising delays, controlling transport costs, and ensuring compliance with import/export regulations.
Responsibilities
Freight & Logistics Management
* Coordinate domestic and international shipments (air, sea, and road) for retail merchandise
* Manage inbound shipments from suppliers to distribution centres
* Oversee container planning, booking, and tracking to ensure on-time delivery
* Monitor shipment milestones and proactively resolve delays to prevent stock shortages
Supplier & Carrier Management
* Liaise with suppliers, freight forwarders, shipping lines, transporters, and customs brokers
* Evaluate Freight Forwarder performance and service levels
* Maintain strong working relationships with logistics partners
Compliance & Documentation
* Ensure accurate preparation and review of shipping documents (commercial invoices, packing lists, bills of lading, customs entries, delivery notes)
* Ensure compliance with import/export regulations and customs requirements
* Monitor adherence to Incoterms and Supplier shipping terms
Cost Control & Reporting
* Track freight spend against budget
* Review and approve freight invoices, identifying discrepancies
* Identify cost-saving opportunities within the supply chain
Inventory & Operations Support
* Work closely with buying, planning, and warehouse teams to align freight schedules with stock requirements
* Support seasonal demand planning and peak trading periods
* Minimise demurrage, detention, and storage costs
Collaboration and Communication:
* Co-ordinate with other departments (e.g., merchandising, finance and operations) to ensure smooth operations
* Communicate effectively with upper management to report operational progress and challenges
* Serve as a point of contact for any escalated freight issues or concerns from the operations team and resolve as needed
