The Junior Clerk role provides comprehensive practice management and clerking support to members of Chambers. It combines operational, administrative, and client-facing responsibilities, ensuring the efficient day-to-day functioning of chambers and the high-quality delivery of services to barristers, clients and courts. The role involves both junior clerking duties and support for senior practice management, offering excellent development potential.
* Provide effective day-to-day support to barristers and practice management teams
* Assist with diary management, hearing bookings, and the coordination of court attendances and conferences
* Ensure barristers receive timely logistical support (e.g. delivery of case materials, copying authorities, arranging court accompaniment)
* Manage incoming instructions and correspondence, ensuring accurate data entry and updates on the LEX system
* Ensure compliance with the BSB Handbook and internal best practices in all aspects of practice management
Clerking and Administrative Functions
* Lodge and collect court documents, assist with bundling, photocopying, and printing case materials
* Coordinate the delivery and collection of papers to and from court, solicitors, and within chambers
* Handle incoming and outgoing post and DX, including special/recorded deliveries
* Monitor and process urgent papers, instructions, and court deadlines
* Respond professionally to calls and emails, directing enquiries appropriately and keeping accurate records
Compliance and Record Keeping
* Ensure chambers’ practices comply with procedures for conflicts, anti-money laundering, and fair work allocation
* Assist in the lodging of skeleton arguments, minutes of order, and maintain accurate records as per the Code of Conduct
* Support the tracking and recording of fee quotes, disputes, and follow-ups in collaboration with other clerks and the fees team
Client Service and Communication
* Maintain a high standard of professional communication with clients, courts, and colleagues
* Ensure hearing and conference logistics (e.g. time, venue, materials) are managed and communicated in advance
* Support members of chambers in preparation for events, seminars, and client engagement initiatives
Teamwork and Support
* Work collaboratively across practice management teams and with marketing, administrative, and reception staff
* Support or deputise for colleagues (Practice Assistant, Practice Manager) as required
* Contribute to a positive, efficient working environment, and assist with lock-up procedures and general maintenance of chambers’ workspace
Qualifications and Experience
* Minimum of two A-Levels (Grade C or above) or equivalent; graduates are also encouraged to apply
* Previous experience in clerking or legal support desirable but not essential
* Excellent organisational skills, attention to detail, and a proactive attitude
* Strong communication and interpersonal skills
* Comfortable working in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment
* 22 days annual holiday, with an additional day for each full year of service
