Job Summary
The States of Guernsey are looking for a Sexual Health and Reproductive Health Nurse to join the Orchard Centre with Public Health Services. The post holder will work effectively as part of the Integrated Sexual Health Service to deliver high‑quality contraception and sexual health services to all individuals, with a particular focus on young people, in clinical and outreach settings such as colleges, schools and community clinics.
Responsibilities
* Work closely with the senior nurse and other team members to pro‑actively facilitate the development of sexual health nursing within the service.
* Provide specialist holistic nursing care in nurse‑led clinics.
* Deliver effective care through partnership working, offering information, advice and support to empower patients to make informed choices.
* Use evidence‑based nursing interventions that are timely and appropriate.
* Issue and administer all forms of contraception and treatments for sexually transmitted infections (STI) using Patient Group Directions (PGDs) in line with HSC and national guidance.
* Promote, develop, evaluate and run services for young people in partnership with appropriate agencies, especially in outreach settings.
* Screen and test for STIs, including venepuncture and point‑of‑care testing, and manage results.
* Conduct genital examinations, obtain swabs and specimens, and manage test results.
* Employ partner notification strategies to ensure contact attendance and treatment.
* Support result and recall systems and follow up promptly.
* Follow safeguarding procedures, liaise with service safeguarding leads and manage referrals and follow‑up.
* Collaborate with Harmful Sexual Behaviours (HSB) agencies to support young people with complex needs.
* Apply judgement in complex situations, including assessing competence to consent for patients under 16 years.
* Provide pregnancy testing and support clients with pregnancy choices and relevant referral mechanisms.
* Deliver brief interventions, opportunistically or planned, in accordance with the public health agenda.
* Develop and maintain robust data‑recording systems, ensuring accurate and legible records and timely reporting.
* Work closely with youth forums, school councils and other youth groups to develop a service that meets user needs.
* Partner with public health, local statutory and voluntary providers to develop practice that is accessible, responsive and targets vulnerable groups.
* Support the Senior Nurse/Clinic Lead in managing the operational function of the service.
* Provide day‑to‑day supervision and coordination of nursing and administrative teams when appropriate.
* Mentor students and colleagues, contributing to an excellent learning environment.
* Participate in in‑house teaching programmes.
* Provide specialist advice to primary care, acute services and the third sector.
* Commit to personal professional development, review practice, set standards and conduct audits.
* Critically appraise and summarise relevant research or audit findings to promote best practice.
* Implement action plans stipulated by national strategies.
* Clinical supervision to support unqualified colleagues accessing regular supervision.
Person Specification
Qualifications
* Registered Nurse or Midwife.
* Recognised qualification in Reproductive and Sexual Health.
* Full driving licence (car driver).
Experience
* Experience working in sexual health services (Contraception and/or GUM).
* Knowledge of current national guidance around sexual health subjects.
* Knowledge of the law and guidance relating to advice and treatment to young people.
* Evidence of continuing professional development.
* Experience working within a safeguarding framework with vulnerable at‑risk clients.
* Understanding of the safeguarding process, child protection procedures, clinical governance arrangements and decision‑making in these areas.
* Ability to work sensitively, non‑judgmentally within an equality and diversity framework.
* Ability to develop relationships with hard‑to‑reach service users and young people.
* Self‑motivated with a proactive and flexible approach.
* Ability to delegate work appropriately and safely.
* Ability to apply research to practice.
* Ability to set personal objectives and manage time, priorities and stressful situations.
* Ability to network and build sustainable working partnerships with other agencies.
