Software Architect – Belfast, UK – Join Thales to design and lead integrated air‑defence solutions.
Role & Responsibilities
* Manage and coordinate software architecture studies from bid to delivery in collaboration with bid/project/product teams.
* Approve technical, technological, and methodological choices within the chosen software architecture.
* Guarantee adherence to standards, reuse, and product policies.
* Prepare and document architecture choices, present justifications and trade‑offs (Design & Justification Files).
* Support and coach development teams throughout the development cycle.
* Participate in knowledge sharing – provide expert insight on state‑of‑the‑art software architecture, write engineering articles, share lessons during webinars, and animate peer programming reviews.
* Maintain a technological watch on trends and identify modeling, simulation and prototyping opportunities.
* Set the expectations for code quality and corresponding KPIs.
* Set up and follow the application of coding practices.
* Actively contribute to the technical solution definition and improvements.
* Help the team focus on cross‑functional requirements.
* Educate and mentor junior developers to help them grow.
* Align development and DevOps priorities to meet technical goals.
* Monitor security and commercial impact of developments on the platform.
Skills & Experience
* Team player with a sharp intellect, challenging approach and a can‑do attitude.
* Significant experience in the full software engineering lifecycle (traditional and agile) including operational deployment knowledge with modern development practices and tools.
* Experience managing multi‑stakeholder change activities in a complex environment.
* Experience delivering software in the context of system‑level and system‑of‑systems programmes.
* Understanding of exploiting architectural modelling techniques.
* Strong influence skills across a matrix organisation, encouraging an open environment for sharing ideas and innovation.
* Familiarity with engineering processes and solution definition.
* Proven modelling skills and ability to use modelling tools/methods.
* Experience working within an agile environment (Scrum, SAFe, LeSS), Lean engineering, and DevOps culture.
* Proficiency in managing performance, robustness, safety and cybersecurity.
* Familiar with design patterns and ability to define reusable referenced architecture in line with product policy.
* Mastery of software design and domain‑related technologies, including regulations and licensing (COTS/OSS, IP, GDPR).
* Strong collaboration skills to interact with other stakeholders.
