What skills and experience we’re looking for
The School Health Care Assistant (HCA) will work closely with the School Nurse to support the health and wellbeing of students and staff at PWH. This role requires a compassionate, organised, and proactive individual who can assist with medical care, administrative duties, and communication with families and external health teams.
Responsibilities
* Assist the School Nurse in the day-to-day care of students and staff.
* Administer emergency medication as trained.
* Support diabetic students with carb counting and pump input when required.
* Be willing to train in injection techniques for diabetic care.
* Fulfil the role of a first aider, providing basic first aid to pupils and staff where necessary.
* Take clinical observations (temperature, blood pressure, pulse) and report findings.
* Assist in weight clinics and other health monitoring activities.
* Accompany students with medical needs on offsite school trips.
* Be familiar with emergency protocols and assist during emergency callouts (blue pen alerts).
* Maintain infection control and hand hygiene standards.
* Support medication audits and stock checks.
Administrative Duties
* Maintain accurate and confidential medical records.
* Liaise with parents, carers, teachers, and external health professionals.
* Complete admin requirements and record keeping in line with school policies (CPOMS/WeAreEvery/etc).
* Communicate confidently via phone and email.
* Assist with scheduling and coordinating vaccination visits.
* Ensure the medical suite is clean, organised, and well-stocked.
* Prioritise tasks effectively within the nursing suite.

Essential
* Emergency First Aid at Work (or equivalent).
* Medication Administration Training (or willingness to complete upon appointment).
Desirable (can be trained once in role)
* First Aid certification including Paediatric First Aid.
* Experience working in a school or healthcare setting.
* Understanding of safeguarding and confidentiality in an educational environment.
* Willingness to undertake training in:
o Medication administration
o Emergency medication protocols
o Injection techniques
o Carb counting for diabetic students
o Use of defibrillator
* Commitment to safeguarding.
