RESPONSIBLE FOR: Hydromechanical Design
LOCATION: Cheltenham or Deeside - office based
WORKING PATTERN: Nominally 37 hours per week, 4 or 5 days Working Schedules, additional hours may be required as necessary to meet business commitments.
TRAVEL: Occasional UK and/or Overseas travel to customers and other Triumph sites.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: English, other languages desirable.
Job Purpose
We are looking for a Lead Design Engineer to join our team. Working within a growing Actuation Products team, you will be responsible for leading the design and support activities of actuation products (hydraulic and electro-mechanical). The role involves the full product lifecycle from New Product Introduction (NPI) through to modifying & supporting in-service products on various programmes, including Airbus, Boeing, SAAB, Leonardo, and other major customers.
The role also requires the dissemination of your engineering knowledge and skills to mentor and grow the more junior members of the team.
Key Responsibilities
* Development and modification of design documentation.
* Interfacing with internal and external customers.
* Design of test rigs and equipment.
* Interpretation of customer's requirements/specifications.
* Identify and communicate technical risks to project stakeholders.
* Presentation of technical solutions at internal and external design reviews.
* Lead cross-functional teams and support problem solving and corrective action activities to resolve design issues, ATP failures, and customer returns/failures.
* Support engineering changes, using Documentation Control Tools (Windchill).
* Manage and review work of other engineers.
* Mentor junior engineers.
* Review and update design guides to include lessons learned and advances in technology.
Technical Requirements
* A solid engineering background - Bachelor of Science in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering or a related discipline (or qualified to an equivalent level) / or equivalent experience.
* Experience in delivering engineering designs in a highly regulated industry such as aerospace, with knowledge of relevant regulations and standards.
* Understanding of Reliability, Safety / Airworthiness, Production methods, Materials and Processes, and Stress and Performance analysis.
* Experience designing with 2D & 3D design tools, preferably SolidWorks.
* Experience designing mechanical and/or hydraulic products, preferably within aviation.
* Experience designing gears, preferably within aviation.
* Held signature approval in previous roles.
* Good knowledge of mechanical components, geometric tolerancing, processing, precision machining, castings, forgings, metallic materials, military and industry standards.
* Understanding of design (DFMEA), testing, and analysis tools (Mathcad, FEA).
* Experience with problem-solving tools (8D, 5Why, Lean tools).
* Strong written and verbal communication skills.
