Overview

The post holder will provide specialist support and advice to patients with diagnosed OMFS cancer, working alongside the Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists to deliver a comprehensive specialist nursing service. The role provides clinical expertise and support for patients and families from diagnosis through investigations, treatment, living with and beyond cancer, and palliation.


Responsibilities

* Act as a key member of the OMFS Cancer CNS team to provide continuity, support and information from diagnosis through treatment and ongoing care, referring to specialist support services as necessary.
* Undertake holistic assessment and care of patients across multiple hospital settings (outpatient, inpatient, day case) and work effectively with the trusts Macmillan Coordinator.
* Plan, deliver and assess health and wellbeing events and adopt the shared caseload philosophy of the team.
* Attend MDT meetings at other hospital sites and work alongside specialist multidisciplinary teams to enhance knowledge and competency to become an expert practitioner in head and neck cancer and symptom management.
* Run nurse-led clinics for tracheostomy and laryngectomy patients, demonstrate expert knowledge and practical skills, assess emergencies and take appropriate actions to ensure patient safety.
* Structure and deliver appropriate teaching sessions for surgical patients and their families.
* Collaborate with MDT members and develop expertise in relation to MDT work; support the telephone triage service.
