Overview

Are you a registered mental health nurse looking for an exciting career change? Would you like to play a key role in providing expert advice on employee mental health and wellbeing? Do you enjoy the challenge of working in a busy service where no two days are the same? An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated Occupational Health Specialist Mental Wellbeing Nurse to join our SEQOHS accredited team at Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust. The post is based at The Working Well Centre, Worcester, but will involve cross site working and travel to some outside NHS sites and companies for whom we provide an Occupational Health and wellbeing service.

Location: Working Well Centre, Newtown Road, Worcester. Post is permanent, full-time, with flexible working options.

Pay band: Agenda for Change Band 6 | Hours: 37.5 per week | Contract: Permanent

Responsibilities

Job purpose

Actively participate and contribute to the development and effective provision of a high quality Occupational Health and Wellbeing Service to the Trust and other public sector and private organisations by promoting mental wellbeing. Liaise with other agencies in planning programmes of care and health education.

Provide clear specialist impartial advice to managers and employees to optimise mental health and wellbeing at work, supporting reduction in sickness absence and preventing work-related ill health.

Identify and maintain a safe working environment and assist service users in planning to maintain mental wellbeing within work. Engage with stakeholders to influence workforce health and wellbeing.

Lead on workplace mental health and wellbeing initiatives; contribute to learning, audit, and evidence-based practice; participate in policy and process development, governance activities, and clinical governance.

Be autonomous as a specialist practitioner, capable of working alone or within the team. Maintain confidential clinical records in line with data protection and Caldicott principles using the OH management system (Cority).

Carry out complex fitness for work assessments and provide highly specialist advice to managers, employees and HR; support sickness absence management and provide coaching for managers on complex cases.

Undertake the role of Duty Nurse Adviser providing telephone advice to contracted clients on mental health queries and complex issues as required. Ensure adherence to departmental policy and contribute to policy development.

Promote proactive health and wellbeing programmes, participate in health awareness initiatives, and provide coaching and mentorship to junior Occupational Health Advisors.

Analyse mental health data and support measures for a proactive OH programme. Ensure knowledge of relevant legislation, NICE guidance and Department of Health guidelines.

Provide emergency response for opening hours incidents (e.g., sharps, needlestick injuries) and initial psychological support needs assessments.

Prepare timely reports to support clients and managers and ensure all clinical care aligns with NMC Code and ethical guidance from FOM.

Demonstrate strong communication and relationship skills to convey complex information to diverse stakeholders and ensure services are well planned and coordinated.


Key duties and responsibilities

Active contribution to SEQOHS accreditation standards; advise management and employees on work and mental health matters; manage own caseload for sickness absence management with complex cases; develop care plans to mitigate workplace health issues; maintain high standards of clinical practice and governance.

The post holder may act in a senior capacity to support junior staff and ensure best practice within the department.

Maintain accurate confidential records; ensure compliant data handling and information governance.

Undertake group interventions and deliver bespoke teaching/training; lead on mental health initiatives; promote evidence-based practice and nursing research within the service.

Be fully conversant with relevant legislation, NICE guidance, and health guidelines; provide emergency/occupational health advice and ensure policy adherence; contribute to policy development and development of OH guidelines in relation to mental health.

Contribute to health promotion, staff wellbeing initiatives, and a proactive health agenda in line with Trust strategy.

Provide coaching and mentorship to junior staff; assess risk factors and early signs of poor mental health; promote behaviour change through engagement with clients.

Ensure excellent communication within multidisciplinary teams and with external organisations; maintain stakeholder relationships and provide training for managers on mental health awareness.

Plan and organise tasks effectively; produce and disseminate management reports; demonstrate analytical and judgement skills; deliver teaching and training as required.

Be prepared to work autonomously and as part of a team, and to travel across sites as required.


Qualifications, skills and experience

Essential

* Registered Mental Health Nurse on the NMC register (RMN, RM Part 1 or equivalent)
* Post-basic qualification at diploma or degree level in or working towards
* Excellent IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); strong verbal and written communication; competent assessment skills
* Risk assessment/management; crisis intervention; analytical and decision-making skills
* Ability to manage multiple activities and caseloads; team and self-management
* Willingness to travel and work across sites; flexible and resilient

Desirable

* Prevention and Management of Suicide training
* Group-based interventions experience; service development experience

Knowledge

* Specialist knowledge across mental health conditions and their relation to physical disorders; knowledge of recovery approaches; health and wellbeing agenda
* Knowledge of counselling skills, CBT and psychosocial interventions
* Ability to interpret research and apply to practice; autonomous decision-making with senior supervision

Experience

* At least 2 years at Band 5 in mental health setting with working age or older adults; experience in delivering clinical interventions and coordinating complex cases
* Evidence of collaborative and partnership working; experience using evidence-based interventions and audit for clinical governance
* Desirable: experience delivering group-based interventions; experience supporting service development
