Overview
The role of Senior Clinical Fellows in Emergency Medicine would be suitable for doctors who have some experience of Emergency Medicine, but need to gain paediatrics and musculoskeletal/trauma competencies before progressing. This post is also suitable for doctors who wish to pursue a career in Emergency Medicine, are working at a senior specialty doctor level and wish to advance their careers, or are looking to take on senior responsibility while consolidating advanced EM skills and leadership abilities.
Contract and Career Progression
Successful candidates will be offered an initial 12-month post (with a focus on exposure to paediatric and musculoskeletal/trauma cases, including a secondment to paediatrics), with the possibility of annual extension and progression to a more senior post. This progression offers support and further secondment opportunities to complete a portfolio of competencies and evidence for the GMC CESR committee for entry onto the EM specialist register. Responsibilities
* Examine, investigate and manage patients presenting to the Emergency Department within the timeframes of the emergency care targets.
* Supervise junior members of the ED team.
* Assist in ongoing management and participate in discharge processes of patients admitted on the ED observation unit.
* Assist in management and discharge of patients admitted to the hospital with head injuries.
* Assist in review of patients attending the ED review clinic.
* Follow agreed Department and Trust protocols and provide best possible care to patients.
* Maintain accurate documentation of patients’ history, assessment and treatment plan.
* Provide computerised discharge GP letters on completion of treatment.
* Participate in clinical governance activities and service improvement projects (including diagnostic test result reviews and recalls, audits) and share learning from incidents and complaints, report safety issues, and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.
* Participate in the organisation and delivery of teaching/training sessions for ED staff and support training of medical students and trainee PAs within the ED.
Facilities, Training and Development
Our Trust provides hospital services to a growing population of around 700,000 across two busy hospital sites in Bedford and Luton; travel between sites may be required. The Trust is state-of-the-art and committed to delivering the best patient care using the best clinical knowledge and technology. The appointee will join the Emergency Medicine team in delivering clinical excellence across the ED and the Trust.
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is encouraged. The post includes elements of the current Specialty Registrar programme with opportunities to support outpatient clinics where a specialty interest exists. The post holder would be encouraged to participate in audits/research with allocated time in their timetable. Access to Library facilities and attendance at Regional Specialist Registrar Programme Teaching Sessions is available. Study leave is as prescribed by the deanery, with an Educational Supervisor allocated for all e-portfolio activities. The post is not recognised for postgraduate training by several Royal Colleges, but study leave may be applied for with approval from the supervising Consultant, Clinical Director and the Director of Medical Education.
Qualifications and Experience
* MBBS or equivalent, a Certificate of Completion of Basic Medical Training or equivalent, and Full MRCEM or equivalent.
* At least 4 years post-graduate clinical experience with completion of Foundation Years (or equivalent), including a minimum of 1 year in Emergency Medicine.
* Applicants must comply with General Medical Council standards; breaches will be investigated with appropriate actions.
Post-Holder Development and Support
The Trust supports Senior Clinical Fellows with training needs, career progression toward Specialty Doctor status or through article 14 to achieve a full CCT, with potential for a full consultant post subsequently. A consultant clinical supervisor will be allocated to meet regularly to develop a Personal Development Plan (PDP). The department offers a comprehensive teaching programme for trainees and provides protected time for professional development. The Trust also supports appraisal and revalidation for all doctors.
Additional Information
The department is highly regarded by trainees for support and experience; previous clinical fellows have a strong track record of securing their preferred specialty training after ED work. The Trust offers academic opportunities, including undergraduate teaching with University College London (UCL) and clinical placements. Applicants must demonstrate English language competence and full GMC registration at the time of application.
