CORE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING 8.1 An understanding of the principles of patient centred care. 9. PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY 9.1 Clinical 9.1.1 Assist the therapy staff in the rehabilitation of patients using a range of delegated therapy treatments. 9.1.2 To manage the rehabilitation of patients as delegated by the therapist. This will involve working without direct supervision on occasions, being responsible for assessing patient progress, progressing treatment as appropriate within set protocols and reporting back to the referring therapist. 9.1.3 Treat patients individually or in a group in a variety of settings without the direct supervision of a therapist e.g. in the department, ward, via virtual groups. 9.1.4 Encourage patients and their carers in an active approach to regaining and maintaining personal independence. This requires empathy, sensitivity and good interpersonal skills. 9.1.5 Use effective communication tools, verbal and non-verbal to communicate treatment programmes to patients who may have barriers to understanding or communicating. 9.1.6 To liaise with the therapist as necessary regarding patient care. In particular highlighting any variations to expected outcomes from treatment programmes you deliver. 9.1.8 To undertake patient home visits to help facilitate patient treatment programmes. 9.1.9 When applicable liaise with nursing colleagues and members of MDT. 9.1.10 In order to facilitate patient treatment effective handling skills eg dexterity and co-ordination will be required. 9.1.11 Contribute to the development of service provision and clinical care by attending appropriate meetings as directed. 9.2 Education and Training 9.2.1 Instruct patients and carers, providing direction and guidance on a range of therapy activities as part of own clinical work or as directed by the therapist. 9.2.2 To attend in-service training as required. 9.2.3 Upon appointment the postholder is required to attend a period of induction which will be supplemented with on the job training including formal teaching and supervised practice. 9.2.4 To actively participate in the delivery of training to newly appointed physiotherapy assistants e.g. inducting them to the department or basic elements of patient care. 9.3 Professional and Managerial 9.3.1 As a member of the clinical team you will be required to ensure that you comply with policy and service development changes. 9.3.2 To be responsible for maintaining own competency to practice through Continued Professional Development activities and maintain a portfolio which reflects your own personal development. 9.3.3 To communicate effectively and work collaboratively with medical, nursing and therapy colleagues to ensure delivery of a co-ordinated multidisciplinary service. 9.3.4 To participate in the staff appraisal scheme as an appraisee and be responsible for complying with your agreed personal development objectives to meet set competencies. 9.4 Organisational 9.4.1 To be responsible for the safe use of therapy equipment by patients in your care through teaching, training and supervision of practice. 9.4.2 Make accurate records of work undertaken and keep monthly statistics as required. 9.4.3 To be aware of Health and Safety aspects of your work and follow any relevant policies. 9.4.4 To comply with the organisational and departmental policies and procedures. 9.4.5 To undertake any other duties that might be considered appropriate by the Superintendent or the Head of Physiotherapy. Health and Safety/Risk Management All staff are responsible for working with their colleagues to maintain and improve the quality of services provided to our patients and other service users. This includes complying at all times with the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust Policies, including Health and Safety policies, in particular by following agreed safe working procedures, and reporting incidents using the Trust Incident Reporting system. The jobholder will undertake all mandatory training required for the role. Respect for Patient Confidentiality The jobholder should respect patient confidentiality at all times and not divulge patient information unless sanctioned by the requirements of the role. 10. COMMUNICATION & WORKING RELATIONSHIPS 10.1 Internal 10.1.1 Therapy Team Leaders 10.1.2 All grades of therapy staff 10.1.3 Medical, nursing and AHP colleagues 10.1.4 Support staff 10.2 External 10.2.1 Personnel working for external agencies. 11. SPECIAL WORKING CONDITIONS 11.1 This job involves exposure to unpleasant working conditions on a weekly basis including direct with bodily fluids and occasional exposure to verbal and physical aggression. 11.2 Frequently throughout the day there will be requirement to undertake moderate physical activity lasting up to 20 minutes e.g. treatment sessions involving passive movements of limbs and transferring of patients. 11.3 There may be the requirement for the post holder to travel between sites within Leeds Health Economy in order to best meet the needs of the service.
