Overview
We are seeking a motivated and compassionate Consultant Psychiatrist to join our dynamic Adult Community Mental Health Team within the Southend Community Mental Health service at Essex Partnership University NHS Foundation Trust. This role provides specialist psychiatric input to adults with severe mental illness across Southend, including patients managed within Community Mental Health Team Primary Care Networks. The post works closely with colleague consultants, PCN clinicians, GPs, and partner agencies.
Key responsibilities include specialist psychiatric assessments, diagnosis, formulation and ongoing management using a biopsychosocial and recovery‑focused approach. Clinical duties comprise medication management, risk assessment, Mental Health Act work (including emergency reviews), participation in multidisciplinary teams, service liaison, and advisory support to CMHT and primary‑care mental health practitioners. The caseload is shared with a trainee doctor.
Applicants must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or equivalent, or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of application.
Responsibilities
* Provide consultant input and person‑centred care for community mental health patients under the CMHT.
* Deliver high‑quality mental health assessments and evidence‑based treatments to all referred patients in line with trust policies.
* Establish a reliable and accessible work schedule, being readily available during working hours.
* Collaborate with colleagues in community and inpatient settings to ensure timely care and transfer of patients as necessary.
* Ensure accurate administration and documentation, including recording clinical activities in the trust electronic patient record system.
* Liaise with primary‑care services regarding patients’ physical, mental and social care needs.
* Co‑ordinate further support and management across services to meet patient needs.
Qualifications
* Full GMC registration.
* Specialist Register status with appropriate CCT or equivalent.
* Minimum of 6 months to CCT on date of application if not yet completed.
* Clinical experience in adult community or inpatient mental health.
* Experience with Mental Health Act procedures and multidisciplinary team work.
